The Basics of Bowling
How to score a strike, a spare, and some guidlines to help you understand the overall concept of bowling
On both sides of the lane theirs what's known as the gutter, it's a trench starting were the lane begins and goes all the way were it ends. If the ball goes into the gutter than you get zero points, really hurting a decent score especially a spare from the previous frame. So try your best to keep the ball on the wood, and out of the gutter, and try and keep your mind out of there too.
Hitting the pins is the next essential step to bowling, and if you've done that than your already doing as good as me! You get two chances to bowl each frame so make good use of them. Also each turn is called a frame and if you hit all ten pins on your first chance you get what's known as a strike doing this will double your point's next tern. The way the strike is scored is, you get 10 points for the strike plus your next two balls, so if you bowl a strike, followed by a five then a one your score would be 10+5+1 for the frame with the strike and 5+1 for the frame you just bowled. So you have a combined score of 22, a little bit confusing but you'll get the hang of it, plus that's why we have electronic scoreboards.
If it takes two turns to knock down ten pins, for example, you knock over 2 pins with your first ball then 8 with your next, that means you got all 10 so it's called a spare. It's not as good as a strike but it will defiantly add to your score. The spare counts as 10 points plus the next ball you throw, so if you bowl a spare then in the next frame knock down 8 pins, then your frame with the spare counts as 18.
Also on the last frame if you get a strike or spare then you have the opportunity to bowl again. As long as you knock down all of the pins within the first two balls then you can go again, so you actually have the chance to bowl three strikes if you're good, or lucky.
I'm not the greatest bowler by any means, but understanding the basics of the game will help you to overall improve you score. Following this guide can make your score better, and in some cases just make you look better while while bowling. Like I say, you can get a gutter ball but as long as you look good doing it, who cares!
