Women's Learn to Run at the Running Room - Week 1
This is an article to talk about my experience taking the Women's Learn to Run at the Running Room.
I do a little bit of exercise here and there, but it has not been easy for me to find an activity that I really enjoy, since physical fitness has been down at the bottom of my list, behind other activities such as working, networking, socializing and relaxing. I always feel better when I am doing some type of exercise, but I am easy swayed by something more fun, like meeting a friend for a dinner or coffee.
To complicate matters, my favorite hobby is cooking. I haven't done much cooking lately, but a year ago, a perfect Sunday for me was slow roasting three chickens, and making a few different kinds of casseroles out of the meat, and then making a bit pot of soup stock, followed by a few different kinds of home made soup. I would freeze these meals for easy lunches, entertain friends with home cooked meals, or give them away to friends who did not enjoy cooking as much as I did.
Needless to say, I am not the "poster child" for a running group.
I have been on (and off) a weight loss program for a few months, and I was told to find some way to exercise at least three times a week, so my choice was to join a Women's Learn to Run group at The Running Room. I walked a marathon last year in Dublin in support of the Canadian Liver Foundation, and I would sure love to complete a marathon again un less than 7.5 hours. So, running it is!
Week one started out with a workshop that gave us a booklet to use throughout the program, a discount to the shop in case we needed some new running shoes, or other items to start out, as well as some instruction on how to pace ourselves and other relevant information.
Our run time was to run sets of running for one minute, and walking for two minutes for seven sets. I was having difficulty about thirty seconds into my one minute run, but I was able to persevere for the full minute, and I was able to fully recover during the two minute walk.
The running room has free runs for members and non-members at Eau Claire at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings, and 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, so in addition to my Friday class, I am running a minimum of two extra days a week. Every Friday, they increase our run time. This is done at a gradual pace, to ensure that we build our running foundations injury free.
I am not enjoying running yet, but I trust this process and feel that it will improve my health, as well as my desire to lose some weight.
The running room has Learn to Run running clinics for anyone who wishes to join, and there is even a specific one for just women - which is the one I chose to take. I feel more comfortable training with just ladies - at least until I am a little bit fitter, faster and leaner.
