Researchers Develop Vibrating Armband to Develop Muscle Memory
Researchers have developed a vibrating arm band that allows the wear to develop muscle memory from more proficient athletes.
Whenever we learn to do anything, from driving a car to throwing a ball to balancing as we walk, our brains and muscles work together to produce just the right combination to allow us to first improve what it is we're trying to do, and then to maintain that ability on into the future. But what is good in one sense, is not so much in another. In order to get really good at something, say, playing tennis, a person has to do a lot of repetitive work to get that muscle memory developed and not everyone is willing to expend such effort. Now it appears that very soon, people won't have to. All it will take is strapping on an arm band, Mail Online reports is called the vibrating Ghost Glove and letting it do all the muscle training while we attend to other business. The Telegraph says the new glove could conceivably someday teach ordinary people to play a sport as well as the pros, all with very minimal effort.
The Ghost Glove has been developed by a team of physiotherapists and engineers at Imperial College in London, though it was originally designed to help those with muscle problems recover. The idea, Online says is to record how muscles operate when exercised by someone that knows what they're doing, say Michael Phelps, or Roger Federer and then to use vibrations to incite muscle memory in someone that does not.
Of course it's not as easy as all that, the Register explains, because the person wearing the Ghost still has to be an active participant in the whole process. They say that it should be imagined as a teaching aid, rather than as a substitute for actual work. To learn using the Ghost, they say, a person would download the recorded muscle movements of a star tennis or basketball player, strap on the Ghost, then hit the courts themselves. The Ghost uses vibrations to let the wearer know when they are moving in the right and wrong ways, subtly guiding them to move in the right ways more and more often. Still, that's a lot better than simply watching the pros on television, or spending a lot of money for a coach that hopefully knows how to convey such information.
The team notes that that the Ghost can also do what they originally envisioned, and that's help people with muscle damage recover faster, and that they say, is its own best reward.
