Welcome to Country Story - the Basics & Tips

Take a break from work and enjoy a breath of fresh air on your own country farm in Country Story!

Drag amp; Drop Interface:

Most casual simulation games have a very standard set controls for game play. Country Story takes those standard control mechanisms and adds a new twist to them. Many of the tasks within the game happen automatically and some by typical point and click. Uniquely, others can be accomplished by using the drag and drop method. For instance, to store items in your shed simply drag an item icon to your shed icon and you are done. To rebuild your player's Stamina, you can drag a food item icon to your player character. For gifting, drag an item's icon and release over the gift wrapped Present icon.

The HUD (Heads Up Display):

Country Story includes a basic Heads Up Display that includes the following: Current weather conditions, a timer, Stamina, and Green Points. Current weather conditions will dictate if you need to use more or less water for your crops. The Stamina bar (blue bar) measures your current Stamina. Stamina is depleted while performing tasks on your farm such as plowing or harvesting. Practically every task has a varying Stamina cost. So how does a player replenish Stamina? A player can regain Stamina by eating a variety of foods of different values. A player may also acquire Stamina through the passing of time; which brings us the next HUD display item. The yellow circle that outlines the weather icon is a timer and each yellow spot can be considered a tick in time. As time passes, things happen - like crops automatically grow, as is also true with Stamina - it automatically replenishes itself. Green Points are like the equivalent of experience points in a traditional role playing game. Green Points are what propels your player to the next level and are earned by doing tasks both large and small. The large yellow number located in the green circle indicates your character's current level of experience.

Inventory, Values, and Costs:

Within Country Story is a miniature economic system. Throughout the game you will discover that items on your farm can have values; they can have an associated cost, they can have an inventory count, and they can also have a value for being sold. In the game window, a small number visible on an item icon serves as a current value indicator. Selling your inventory will earn you Gold Coin profits, giving you the opportunity to further expand your farm. If you are not in the mood to sell, items you currently own can also be stored in your shed.

Green Points and Awards:

Experience is gained buy simply buying , growing, and selling your crops and produce. Other activities and Quests will also gain you credits in for experience and awards. The values for these vary by the task, but ultimately help to move you to the next level. By reaching higher levels, more items, Quests, and features become available as well having your Stamina Increased. Awards are trophies that can be earned by completed a specific line of tasks that are related to one another. The benefit of a trophy is usually in the form of a "boost" to the player's abilities such as having an increase of water capacity for your watering can from the "All sprite now" Award.

Money:

The game's financial backbone relies on the good old Gold Coin. Gold Coins are earned by completing tasks such as Quests, and by selling your crops.

Playfish Cash is the secondary monetary unit within Country Story and certain items (such as fertilizer) require that you pay with this method. Playfish Cash can be purchased with real world money via Paypal or other methods. Interestingly, Playfish Cash is exchangeable between Playfish games.

Style and Decorations:

If you are unhappy with the look of your character or your farm, you can change things up by clicking on the "Style" icon. You can change your character's clothing, or even his or her name and gender. Your home can be repainted, and there are an assortment of backdrops available to pick from to give your farm a whole new look. Selections include a mountain range or outer space. As many backdrops are free, others will cost money. Decorations such as fences, plants, and furniture can also be added to your farm via the "Shops" icon buy using Gold Coins. There are also often special decorations.

Farming:

Maintaining your farm is very straight forward, although there is certainly much more to keep in mind compared to other games in the genre, such as Quests. Your land needs to be prepared: plowed, seeds planted, fertilized, watered, and harvested. The games farming tools are clearly labeled and the steps in the process are obvious and cannot be done out of order. As a player you must remember that some crops require more watering than others and often they can go bad if unattended. As you progress through the game, your increased experience and farming abilities can earn you more areas on which to plant crops.

Resources for your farm can be purchased by using the "Shops" icon. You can buy seeds at the Market, produce trees and animals at the Animal amp; Tree Shop, and materials such as sticks amp; stones at the Construction Shop. Many seeds are not available until reaching a higher experience level.

Livestock:

Raising Livestock is very similar to growing crops. Livestock can be received after finishing a quest or they may be purchased. The benefit of having Livestock is the production of produce which you can in turn sell for Gold Coins. In order for your Livestock to thrive , you must feed them and show them affection. Both of these tasks can be accomplished by hovering the mouse over any particular animal. Upon hovering with the mouse, the heart icon appears and is for showing your animal some love. Another icon also displays and is for feeding your animal. Different animals eat different food, and the food you grow for your animal can't be sold for a profit. Clicking the icons will help the animals grow, and failure to do so will slow down their growth rate (which is displayed by the clock icon when hovering). The last two indicator icons that appear are there to display whether your animal is hungry and happy.

Raw Materials:

Sticks and Stones can be found for free while wandering around your property, in Quests, or they can be purchased at the Construction Shop in bulk. They can be sold, used when purchasing livestock, or sent to a friend in exchange for Friendship Points. To send these materials or any items to a friend you can gift them by drag and dropping them on the gift wrapped Gift icon.

Quests:

One feature that sets this game apart form other similar games in the genre is the addition of Quests. As your character progresses in experience levels with daily activities on the farm, new Quests become available. By clicking on different characters in the "Village" you can read a Quest's description, and you can learn of its requirements and its rewards. Requirements are usually the collection of items and tasks to be completed on your farm, and rewards are items. A really nice thing about Quests; you can finish them within your own time frame. So for example if a Quest requires several steps, you are not obligated to finish them immediately and may continue at a later time. It is important to note, however, that some Quests cannot be started until others are completed. Interesting Quests include helping your friends, or stealing from them!

Friendship Points:

Every player begins Country Story with 75 Friendship Points and you can spend and earn them during your daily activities by your own doing or because of the requirements for a Quest. Why have Friendship Points? Outside of the requirements of a Quest it is strategy to have friends. Friends can take care of crops before they go bad, and can they can also protect them from being stolen. Friendship Points are earned by sending items to friends. You can earn up to 10 Friendship Points per friend each day.

Stealing:

Stealing is welcome in Country Story! By doing so you can earn Gold Coins and Green Points. Particular Quests will require that you steal - go figure! The down side is that Stamina is spent. Be on the lookout when stealing, as the farm you are trying to steal from may have a Dog. A Dog can be obtained from a higher level quest, and it can protect your crops from being stolen. If you are unsuccessful in your theft attempt, you will receive a warning that the Dog caught you and you'll suffer the unfortunate experience of losing 50 Gold coins. The Activities icon will show you activity on your farm while away, including who has stolen from you.

Tips:

- When you assign friends to your crops, they cannot be stolen.
- Fertilizer is not required for your crops, but it reduces the time to harvest.
- Use Strategy to balance Stamina when farming crops for a higher Gold Coin resale value.
- Send cheap or free items to Friends in order to regain Friendship points at a low cost.
- Visit friends' farms to collect free sticks and stones once a day.
- Visit friends' farms to earn a "Make a Wish". By doing so, you can win free fertilizer. The more friends you have, the more fertilizer and other freebies you can get ...but only once per friend!
- Take note, fertilizer is not transferable to other players and cannot be sold.
- If you place livestock in your shed, the produce that is ready for the taking is lost.
- Livestock timers do not count while the livestock is in the shed.
- Feed and show affection to your livestock or their production rate will decrease.
- Steal only when necessary in order to avoid the guard dogs and the potential loss of Gold Coins.
- Routinely check the Activities icon to see who has been helping on your farm and who has been stealing from it.
