Central School-Prep Station for Your Kids
Kids running all over the place on school mornings? This central prep station will help settle everyone down and ensure they're all ready for the day!
Everyone awaits their turns in the bathroom on school mornings; the kitchen is often crowded and bustling. These areas aren't ideal for creating the central prep station for your kids. Find an area near the front or back door to set up the prep center. One thing you'll definitely need is a mirror. Hang a mirror on the wall in the preferred area. Hang it low enough so that kids can check their hair and face. If you have tall kids and short kids consider hanging one mirror under another to accommodate everyone. Before going out the door to school they can each check to see that everything's in order.
Another handy item to have at the prep station is a wire basket. This can hang on the wall or even off the bottom of the mirror. There are many ways to attach the basket including glue strips, "c" hooks, suctions cups and picture hangers. The basket can hold all sorts of items that will ensure kids start the day off right. Drop in a comb and/or brush for each child or have one set that they all share. If you don't have a wire basket use a wicker basket or even a decorated cardboard box. If you don't have a place to hang the basket or box just set a stool or table against the wall, under the mirror.
In the basket or box kids can find everything they might possibly need at the last minute. Headbands, hair spray, a spray bottle of water for taming wild hair, and similar hair products. Hair issues aren't the only things to deal with on school mornings, though. Use a small tube to hold extra pencils and pens in the basket. They'll never arrive at school without a pencil again!
Hang "s" hooks on the front of the wire basket and you can hang everything from car keys to change purses. The hooks can hold cell phone holders and many other items. The hooks are inexpensive and found at any hardware store. Simply hang them on one of the wires, or around the rim of a non-wire basket, and organize many small items.
With a wire basket you can easily hang notes and reminders by using flat magnets. Purchase the magnets in the small square shapes, or small round ones, and stick them to the basket. Place one magnet on top of the other and stick them to the basket. Pull the first magnet off, position your note on the second magnet, then replace the first one. The two magnets will trap the note and hold it to the basket. If you're using a basket which isn't wire you can glue the magnets onto the basket. Or, hold the two stacked magnets on the outside while you position another magnet on the inside. The inside magnet will hold the outside ones in place. This works great for thin cardboard boxes but not so well with wicker baskets. You'll find the small magnets, in several shapes and sizes, at any craft store.
Other items you might want to put in the basket include a notepad, a pen tied to a string, eyeglasses and eyeglass holders, calculator(s), vitamins, lotion, nail polish for touch-ups, hand sanitizer, pop-up wipes, signed notes and permission slips, any prescription morning medicines, gloves or mittens, and similar items. The size basket you use will determine how many things can be stored in it; the ages of your kids will help you decide what all needs to be added.
Mornings can be hectic and chaotic when there are school kids running around getting ready. You can make life easier on them - and especially on yourself - when you set up a central school prep station in your own home. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to put the handy prep station together. No more kids going out the door without combing their hair, forgetting books, or going off without their pencils and other needs. You'll have everything they need in one place and that will make things run much more smoothly. Try it and see!
