Eyes that Once Twinkled
The twinkle in her daddy's eyes that she loved so much is missing now. For short times that twinkle visits him as he slips away to visit his love. She finds a reason to be thankful as she too slips into the past and memories gone but not forgotten.
Growing up he was a giant among men in her eyes. He could do anything. When she ended an abusive marriage, it was her daddy that stuck by her side. He drove over an hour each way twice a week to watch her children so she could pick up extra money working nights as a waitress. He is the one that taught her how to wire electricity, and change the oil in the car. Together they built a house for her and her children. Though her mother was one of her very best friends, and she could never express how much she missed her, she knew he missed her more. She wished daily that more family would visit him. Her own children came as often as they could, but she wished the others would come, too. She longed to see him smile more and to see the eyes that twinkled with love and compassion around his family.
The cancer now causing pain even with all the medication, limited him most days. She worries about him falling and breaking a bone. Though at this point he still has good days and gets around with the help of his cane, he seems frail at times. Just after these short trips of the mind and spirit are the times that bring her joy. For a short time she can see the love that filled his eyes for his beloved wife even as she lay with cancer the last months of her life. Only, as he shares so often now, he doesn't see her that way when he slips away. He describes her the way she looked when she was thirty-years-old, just like the picture he carries in his wallet. The picture we have made copies of because he takes it in and out so much. He shows about everyone he meets for the first time and never misses the opportunity to tell them how blessed he was that she married him. Each time he does, you see that twinkle in his eye as he describes what a good Christian woman she was, and how her faith saw her through so much. After small talk of the day, he steadies himself and back in his house, thinking a western is calling his name. She knows he is hoping to visit that far-a-way place again, and maybe this time see other loved ones he misses so much. He speaks often of one brother or another.
During today's chat he remembered yesterday was his brother Junior's birthday, and Paul's is December 29th. He knows most of them from memory and that says a lot, it was a big family. Her son had texted her and as she read him the text, he smiled. He said that her children learned from her. She looked puzzled but then saw a twinkle as he reminded her he still had a letter she had written to her mother and him on adding machine paper many years ago. All the cards mommy tried to keep, he explained, but me, I held on to the special ones. Hold onto the memories in your heart, and then when you are older, you can visit them.
She heads back into her home, to raise her praise to God above that she was blessed with another day to love her daddy. She prays for many years to be left to do so, but knows time is not her choosing, just as it wasn't with her mom. For today though she is thankful for those few moments of that twinkle back in daddy's eyes.
