Visit Asheville NC - Not Just for Mountaineers
Asheville, NC is a historically popular vacation spot. What can Asheville offer vacationers today?
Western North Carolina offers a wonderful mix of ancient mountains and picturesque views with a temperate climate and still pristine forests protected by federal parks and state nature areas. Asheville is a popular destination for travelers who want to have the beauty of the area at their back door. But Asheville offers a cultural experience and a number of resort options too.
The Vanderbilt family still owns the historic Biltmore. A number of tourist options are available including a daily pass and annual passes that pay for themselves after two visits. See your local AAA Auto Club site for discount tickets, including the annual passes. Children, even teens, are free for most of the Biltmore events. Parking is also included.
After having your ticket validated as you drive through the initial entrance area, guides will direct you to free parking areas and you will trek to the picturesque mansion. From the walled area you enter as you leave the parking area, you will set up a reservation to enter the house. To the right of the mansion you will find a gift shop, ice cream shop, and outdoor and indoor eateries, all in the area of the historic stables. On the right, absolutely do not miss an opportunity to take in the gardens. Even in the winter months, the greenhouse is open and the plant specimens are a not-to-be-missed treat. The ideal visits are in the spring and fall when the temperatures are bearable or in the early mornings in the summer. The grounds offer minimal cover in areas and the heat can be oppressive. The grounds offer a variety of walking trails. Make sure, if able, you walk to the bass pond. There is a small waterfall and a tranquil pond that offer shade after what can be a strenuous trek.
The house is well documented as the largest private home in the US. There are audio guides available for a fee but the guide map is ample for many. There are huge marble staircases and wonderful collections for viewing. If you are interested in interior design, the fabrics and the restoration process will be entertaining and educational. If you visited years ago, additional areas continue to be restored and opened to the public so do return for another look. If you can visit during the Holiday season, the mansion has a special Poinsettia display and holiday festival of decorations. The holiday season opens Black Friday and there are candlelight tours available with reservations.
The Biltmore recently expanded to include a 4-star resort on its grounds, The Inn at Biltmore Estate (www.biltmore.com/stay). Staying in the expensive digs do provide transportation to the mansion as well as access to the broader property. Horseback riding and rafting are available. It is cushy. It is not unique (see below for a better option).
A favorite respite following the mansion tour is a visit to the winery. Activities have expanded to include mock grape crushing by the kids ending in making purple footprint takeaways and there is grape juice to drink for the kids while the parents enjoy a tasting. The wine shop, located in the old dairy on the grounds, can be expensive - the winery's products are shipped throughout groceries in the region - but the selection on site tends to be more vast than I can find locally. If you have a favorite, you might consider buying on site. There is also an al fresco cafe and an elegant indoor restaurant. The outdoor dining option is a favorite as it is casual and the peanut-size lights make for a charming environment in the early evening. The food is local and varied. The inside option can be more expensive and is often busy Sundays following church. Both are tasty options. Expect a wait for a table at most times of the year for each except in winter months.
If you choose not to stay on the grounds in the Biltmore Inn, a wonderful and historic option is the Grove Park Inn. Built from stone quarried from the mountainside it hugs, the exterior is a unique landmark you will not soon forget. The red roof is undeniable as the stone building tends to blend into its environment. It is truly a memorable inn with a golf course surrounding the historic hotel and a detached sports complex building with a large indoor pool and outdoor tennis adjacent. Kids will have hours of fun enjoying the sports site regardless of the weather. There is also a gym to keep the pounds off.
The inn has expanded over the years from its initial cavern-like structure with wings of more modern rooms in a U-shape to form the present resort hotel. Try out the old-style elevator in the main inn just for the experience. Rooms in the newer wings are much larger but non-remarkable.
The inn features a huge entry and foyer dominated by the old-style timbers and a casual piano bar. Casual evenings can be spent enjoying the music and the company of visitors from all over the region. The foyer opens onto a large veranda where a wonderful restaurant is out in the clear air, year-round and in all temperatures. The restaurant, the Sunset Terrace, has overhead heaters and protection against the elements. The menu is expensive and features wonderful steaks. If you prefer the indoors with a wonderful skyline view, choose the Blue Ridge Dining Room and its gourmet menu. It too is pricey. Finally, Horizons is the flagship restaurant and features North Carolina fare. Frankly, all of the resort food options are expensive.
But then, there's the spa. Ranked #13 in the US by Travel amp; Leisure magazine, the spa is tucked into the inner sanctum of the historic inn as though carved into the mountainside. The spa is largely below ground so as not to obstruct the hotel views but it is massive inside with multiple water options, treatments, a spa shop, and an indoor-outdoor heated pool option with a current that whisks you inside and outside with little effort. At 40,000 square feet under roof, the spa is full of options and any visitor could make a day of the spa (or even a weekend). There are couples options too.
The resort also brings in entertainment at various times during the year so before booking, check out the options (www.groveparkinn.com).
Finally, Asheville itself has a number of cultural options. Visit Thomas Wolfe's home or the Smith-McDowell Home-Museum for half-day outings. The Biltmore Village just outside the mansion features some unique boutiques and craft shops where one could easily spend an afternoon browsing. The Asheville downtown area also features boutiques, resale shops, crafts, and a hodge podge of unique gift shops. An abundance of sidewalk cafes can be found in the downtown area, as well.
Asheville, NC is a wonderful visit any time of the year. Spend a relaxing long weekend or more in the city and you will find out why it is a must see per Frommer's in 2020.
