The rainbow of colors that is apple's new iPod claims to make the Nano rock like never before, but does it?
In all honesty, you shouldn't.
The new Nano is marketed with three main points.
1.) It's prettier and curved
2.) It has the genius feature recently added to iTunes on it
3.) You can shake it to shuffle songs
Well not that those qualities aren't interesting to me and don't make me want to go out and get it, but these don't seem to be strong points for spending two-hundred bucks on an iPod. You could get a colored and curved iPod simply buy purchasing a case for one. These things have been around almost as long as iPods have and aside from the color content, it protects your iPod as well. In fact, even expensive leather cases don't cost more than twenty bucks online.
The genius feature is on the new iTunes if you haven't already downloaded it. The concept is that this program will create new playlists for you based on you listening styles and analyzing you as a listener. This sounded exciting to me at first, but then I realized something, I already know what music I like. I don't think I need to pay for a computer program that will tell me that my musical interests are. Maybe there are people lazier than me who can't spend five minutes dragging and dropping a playlist on their own iTunes, but I for one can do that without Apple's help.
Finally there's the accelerometer that lets you shake the iPod to shuffle songs. This is an awesome feature to show off to your friends, but about a week later you will realize there would be a far more practical feature that could be implemented. Maybe a shuffle button or something instead... If only iPods didn't already have this feature. They just made a chore out of shuffling your music, when the same thing could be done with a button press.
At the end of the day, if you are going to buy an iPod, but a 1st generation Nano off of eBay for fifty bucks, and go install rockbox media player on it. For a quarter of the price, you will get the music and video support of the new Nano. If you want it colored, buy a case. If you want genius, download the new iTunes. If you really want to shake it to shuffle songs, shell out two-hundred dollars.
