Armband Tool Holder for Kids or Adults
Crafting or fixing things will be so much easier once you make this armband that holds everything from nails to screwdrivers!
Have you ever seen how cheap magnets are? Okay, maybe you haven't been shopping for magnets recently, but they happen to be very inexpensive in most cases. Purchase them in different sizes and shapes at most any hardware, craft or discount department store. Purchase flat, square magnets, in a pack of several, to make the armband tool holder.
The fabric you use for the armband should not be lightweight and should be very sturdy. Denim works great for this craft, however, corduroy is not ideal. Choose material that is way too thick, though, and you'll have trouble getting metal objects to stick to it. Choose fabric that's too thin and you chance having it rip from the weight of the tools. You can choose cloth that has a pretty pattern, is bright and cheery, or is a darker, manly color.
Cut a piece of the cloth so that it is long enough to go about two-thirds of the way around your upper arm. Cut the width of the fabric so that it is about 5" wide. If the fabric is the type that can unravel easily it's best to hem it or treat it with a no-fray liquid. The no-fray solution can be found at most any store that sells sewing notions. Treat the edges of the fabric with the solution following the instructions on the package. If you sew you can eliminate the hassle by simply stitching a hem around the fabric.
Whether you sew or not you can completely make the armband tool holder yourself. If you don't sew use fabric glue to create it. The glue is found with other adhesives at craft, hardware and discount department stores. As a matter of fact, you have three choices for making the armband: sewing, gluing, or a combination of sewing and gluing.
After you've cut the first piece of fabric, and you've hemmed or treated it with no-fray, align flat, square magnets across the length of the fabric. Use hot glue to hold the magnets in place. The magnets should be aligned so that they are side-by-side, in several rows, with small spaces left between each set. It's necessary to leave small spaces between each magnet so that the band will easily shape around the arm. Using one large, flat magnet will prevent the band from bending and wrapping around the arm.
If you prefer to sew, stitch wide ribbon pieces across the length of the armband piece, then stitch down in rows. This will create small pockets in which you will place the magnets. If sewing, it's important to make sure all the pockets are small enough to keep the magnet in place, yet large enough to make it easy for slipping in the magnets.
After the magnets are in place you'll position a second piece of cloth over the first, with the magnets trapped between them. The second piece of fabric will need to be slightly longer and wider to get the perfect fit. Position the second piece over the magnets and sew or glue in place across both of the long sides of the fabric.
On the short sides of the fabric you'll insert pieces of velcro so that the armband will fit snugly around your arm. Cut one strip of velcro and pull the two pieces apart. Glue or stitch one velcro piece to one end of the armband; the other piece to the opposite end. After having the straps in place glue or stitch the short ends of the armband shut.
Wrap the armband around your arm when you're going to work with tools. Stick the tools, nails, and other metal implements directly to the armband. The magnets inside ensure that the tools and other items easily stick to the armband. Simply put the tools to the magnets then take them off when you need them.
You can even use the armband to clean up staples, tacks, nails, needles or pins. Simply slide your hand into the armband and sweep the area. Crafters, wood workers and others doing repair or building jobs will appreciate the tool armband. It easily holds many different items - even heavyweight things.
