Most Common Running Injuries

Many people want to start running, but are unaware of the risks that can be involved. With the start of a new year, there are people who want to get in shape and running is one of the best ways to do just that.

The areas that are mainly affected with running related injuries are your hips, knees, ankles, and feet. These are where the most common injuries happen. When you run, your muscles and joints take most of the shock. If you do not know the first signs of injuries, you could do even more damage.

To avoid injuries, there are things you can do such as, stretching not only before you start your run, but also after you finish your run. There are many different types of stretches out there you can do, just make sure you are doing some. Stretching not only helps prevent injuries, but also helps with flexibility. Make sure you go to a knowledgeable running shoe store. Remember that the actual life of a tennis shoe is only about 3 months. Take care of your feet; you are on them all the time. Make sure you allow your body rest. Do not train too hard for too long; your body need time to recuperate.

If there is an injury, knowing some of the things to look for will help you not to injure yourself more. Joint pain, soreness that you can pinpoint to a specific location, swelling, not being able to move a joint as much as before, relative weak points, and area's of your body going numb or feeling tingly are all common symptoms that something serious could be wrong. Your body needs rest as to not injure yourself any more. Seek a consult from your doctor if things do not clear up in just a few days.

Some of the most common running injuries are sprains, muscle soreness, Iliotibial Band Syndrome (IT band), Runner's Knee, Plantar fasciitis, Shin Splints, or Tendinitis. Each of these injuries can be prevented (or lessened) if you just take the time to try to prevent them using the steps listed above. Even those who are careful and take all the necessary precautions, may still get an injury, it just may not be as severe.

Injuries may cause a runner to have to take time off from running or have to quit all together. With just a few precautionary steps, you can be on your way to running that race you want to run. Having a plan mapped out and sticking to it can mean the difference in achieving those goals with or without injury.
