Cam Newton Declared Eligible to Play by NCAA
How would the NCAA punish the Newtons? What would be fair, if anything?
While the NCAA has determined that Cecil Newton was in fact soliciting money, they have determined that neither Cam Newton, nor the University of Auburn had any knowledge of it. There have never been any allegations against Auburn.
While I agree that this kind of solicitation is with out a doubt improper, and should be punished in some form, I think that this particular case raises several problems in the enforcement of the rules. The first issue is that if it is true that Cam Newton was not aware of the solicitation, and decided against going to the school that was being solicited, how can you punish him fairly? If Auburn had no knowledge of the improprieties, and the player himself had no knowledge of it, how then do you enact any sort of punishment?
The popular consensus among the talking heads and reporters was that Auburn would probably have to vacate wins of any games that Cam Newton played in, which in this case would have been all of them. How would that have been fair? Again, Auburn University was never implicated in any improprieties, so it would be unjust to take anything away from the University, or its fans. Even if you believe that Cam should be held accountable for his father's actions, why should the entire University have to suffer for it?
Auburn has limited Cecil Newton's access to its Athletic Department, and Mississippi State has disassociated the "individual involved", who most believe to be Kenny Rogers. Is that enough? Probably not. But what is the alternative?
