Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Songs About Running
Avid runner Roy A. Barnes shares his top 10 classic rock and pop running songs. Will these tunes make you want to get up and run?
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 1: Run To You, by Whitney Houston
What a tear jerker this song is! It comes from one of my favorite movies, The Bodyguard. Whitney really sings this song with yearning and it cuts to through to the bone marrow. Does the refrain strike a chord when you really want to be held by your special someone?
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 2: Runnin' With The Devil, by Van Halen
This is definitely the most intense sounding of my top 10 classic rock and pop running songs, yet I like this song a lot despite the fact it's a kind of slow song for all its intensity. Maybe all that hard living slowed down Van Halen a bit as they sing this personal top 10 classic rock and pop of running songs about burning the candle at both ends!
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 3: Run Runaway, by Slade
I once had the treat as a teenager to be lucky enough to see this fast paced and frantic song be performed on American Bandstand! I happened to be watching the show on tv at the right time, and was shocked that a band like this would be on the show. I thought that only dancing acts basically got put on with Dick Clark. This could be my favorite of my personal top 10 classic rock and pop of running songs.
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 4: Runnin' Down A Dream, by Tom Petty
Of all the classic rock and pop running songs, I think of this one the most for some reason (especially when I'm running), even though if you study the lyrics, it's about something I never really do nor ever did when I owned a vehicle: about getting away from it all by taking a long drive in your car. The fast paced aspect of this song is what attracts me.
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 5: Runaway, by Bon Jovi
Runaways are running from something, you know, especially their parents. Well, this was the first song that exposed me to Bon Jovi back in the early 1980's when I was a teenager. Last year, I got see Bon Jovi perform at Cheyenne Frontier Days, and they were great. I really enjoyed the way the fans sang the refrain with or to Bon Jovi when the group performed this particular song.
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 6: Runaway Train, by Soul Asylum
When I first heard this song, I thought it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers singing this personal top 10 rock and pop of running songs, but I found that another group's lead singer actually sounded like Tom Petty to my ears. I really enjoy the fast pace but smoothly crooned rendition of this running song. A runaway train isn't something you want to be in front of...or on!
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 7: Run Like Hell, by Pink Floyd
This incredibly intense and violent sounding song comes from Pink Floyd's concept album The Wall. Most fans of Pink Floyd will have seen the movie that goes with the album, and the images associated with the song in that production really show how intolerance can play out, sort of alluding to what the Nazis did to the Jews when those hateful fanatics were in power in the earlier part of the 20th century.
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 8: Against The Wind, by Bob Seger
Running in Wyoming means that you're gonna be running in a lot of wind, especially from late summer through the following spring. When it's really windy out there from the West, and I'm running home into that westerly wind, this melancholy classic rock and pop of running songs about metaphorically running against the wind appears in my mind often.
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 9: It Keeps You Runnin', by The Doobie Brothers
Even though this song netted a Top 40 hit in 1977 for the Doobies, it would be almost 20 years before I'd ever have the chance of hearing this classic rock and pop of running songs. I was introduced to this tune while watching the movie Forrest Gump, one of the great runners of the movies, for sure! What keeps one runnin'? According to the song, it's hiding your heart. Are you running from some issue in your life that needs to be addressed? All of us need to ask this question.
Top 10 Classic Rock and Pop Running Songs Selection Number 10: Chariots Of Fire - Titles, by Vangelis
Chariots of Fire is considered one of the great running-themed movies by many...but not me. I've watched it a couple of times, but I feel it's boring and dull, yet when I'm running, I do often think of the movie's instrumental theme. So I do take something positive away from this movie, after all. Vangelis scored a Number 1 hit with this on the pop charts back in 1982.
