Garmin Nuvi GPS: Suggested Improvements for a Great Product

I love my Nuvi, but there are a couple of improvements that could make it even better.

The nuvi 260W works right out of the box, does not require a subscription, and can guide you in the United States, Mexico and Canada. It gives you turn by turn directions, and instead of telling you to "turn right in 40 ft", it tells you "in 40 feet, turn right on Main St ". A friend had an older Garmin that didn't announce street names. On one trip, he turned in what he thought was 40 ft, and he ended up heading east when he was supposed to head west! He upgraded to the nuvi 260 as soon as it became available, and it was his advice that I took when I bought mine.

Glinda always sounds a little frustrated with me when I decide to ignore her directions, as she informs me that she is "recalculating", but she recalculates immediately and gives me the next set of directions based on my new route.

There is one major change I'd like to see in the interface, and I hope the programmers at Garmin are listening. When you're done adding a favorite address, or you want to return to the main menu after searching for something by name, you have to hit the back button repeatedly until you reach the screen you want. I think there should be a main menu button on each screen so that you can quickly jump back at any time.

One of the great things about the Garmin, is that it is portable and you can move it from car to car as needed, as well as take it down for security reasons. The unit came with a strong suction cup that works much better than I would have imagined. The only drawback is that the suction cup is rather awkward in shape and size. What I'd like to see them add is a suction cup that folds down flat into the device. Then you have only one piece to worry about, and it can be stored in a flat protective case.

Another reason I love my Garmin, is that it lists attractions, shopping areas, and restaurants near your present location. They give you the name and the direction/distance from you, but what I think would be even more useful in the search results screen would be the time it would take you to get there.

As for the restaurant searchers, I would love to see them add more information about the restaurants, including dress code, operating hours, price range, and whether or not the location is kid friendly.

Finally, when it can't find a satellite, it should immediately ask if you are home, or prompt you for another location instead of just giving you the option to keep searching, or use it in a simulated mode which assumes you are in the same place you were when you last turned it off.

All in all, it really is a great product, with just a little room for improvement!
