The Most Influential Album You've Never Heard
When one thinks of the early 90's music scene, one conjures up images of flannel, long hair and combat boots. This album has none of those things yet still seems to fit perfectly with the grunge scene of the time and is an essential media artifact.
I know what you're (probably) thinking: "who the hell are The Vaselines?" I don't blame you. Unless you were in Seattle in the late 80's and hanging around Kurt Cobain, there's almost no chance you would even have a chance of hearing ABOUT them, let alone hearing them. A darn shame, because The Vaselines are probably one of the most underrated bands to have ever existed.
The Vaselines were a Scottish band who were lead by Eugene Kelly and Frances McGee, both sharing equal parts of the guitar and vocal load. Their music is reminiscent of a poppier version of Nirvana; whereas Kurt focused his energy and teen angst into writing angry and destructive anthems, The Vaselines took at different route. Though the band clearly had their fair share of angst, they channeled their energy into the lighter sides of teen life: chasing after girls, recreational drug use, arguments with parents, and more songs about girls. If you're thinking that they basically sound like The Beach Boys, you're partially right. Imagine Nirvana and The Beach Boys had a child with an Oscar Wilde-like sense of innuendo and you've got an idea of the Vaselines.
"The Complete Way of The Vaselines" is a collection of everything they ever released in their short period of existence from 1986 to 1990. This 1992 album combines two EPs and another album plus numerous demos to make one 19 track masterpiece. The opening track "Son of a Gun" is probably the strongest on the album: a near perfect blend of jangly guitars, loud drums, and alternating male/female vocals. If you listen to one song on the album, make it this one as it's most representitive of The Vaselines as a whole. The next exceptional song comes at track four with "Dying For It," Eugene's nearly solo tour de force which is probably the album's fastest song and one that you're guaranteed to at least tap your toes to. Rounding out the top three for the album is track fourteen, "The Day I Was A Horse." This, the happiest sounding song on the album produces a rather vivid story about hallucinations from drugs gone wrong without detracting from the overall upbeat feeling of the song. The rest of the album is very good, though some songs get repetitive toward the end (my only complaint about the album).
You're probably wondering how I can say such an unknown album can be so essential and influential as to be a must own. They said the same thing about the Velvet Underground back before they were commonly played on mainstream television. They saying goes "not very many people bought a Velvet Underground album, but those that did all started bands." The same is true with The Vaselines; almost every early 90's alt. rock band audibly takes elements from their songs. Heck, Kurt Cobain even named his daughter after one of the members!
