Kathmandu Durbar Square: Nepal's Cultural Heritage
Kathmandu Durbar Square known as Hanuman Dhoka is so called because of a large statue of Hanuman, the Monkey God and devotee of Lord Ram, located right in front of the Royal Palace.
Kathmandu Durbar Square, full of temples, palaces, ponds, quadrangles and courtyards is built on an area covering 5 acres. Kathmandu Durbar Square also known as Hanuman Dhoka is so called because of a large statue of Hanuman, the Monkey God and devotee of Lord Ram located right in front of the Royal Palace. History records that the Royal Palace was built by King Shankaradev. The statue of Lord Hanuman in front of the Royal Palace was said to have been erected by King Pratap Malla in the belief that Hanuman would extend protection to the palace. Till the 19th Century, the Royal Palace was the abode of the Nepalese Royalty. Their home has since shifted to the Narayanhity Royal Palace. Nonetheless important occasions such as the coronation of the King still take place in the Nasal Chowk of Kathmandu Durbar Square.
Museums
The King Tribhuwan Memorial Museum and the Mahendra Museum are housed presently in the Royal Palace. The State Rooms located within are open to visitors.
Temples
Mahendra Malla (1560 to 1574) built some of the oldest temples located in Kathmandu Durbar Square. These are the temples of Kotilingeswara Mahadev, Jagannath, the Taleju Temple and the Temple of Mahendreswara. During his reign, King Pratap Malla built some of the other popular temples i.e. Indrapura, Trailokya Mohan, Degutale and Indrapura, Maru Ganesh, Maju Deval, Shiva Parvati and Kageswara Mahadev. Also known as Maru Sattal, the Kasthamandap Temple is thought to have been built from the wood of a single sal tree.
Kumari Bahal
The Kumari Bahal lies towards the south of the Kathmandu Durbar Square. The Living Goddess, Kumari resides in the Kumari Bahal. Still a young girl, not having reached puberty, Goddess Kumari is worshipped as the reincarnation of Goddess Taleju Bhawani. Both Buddhists and Hindus worship Goddess Kumari.
Palaces
With prominent Greek columns and finished in white plaster is the large palace complex called the Gaddi Durbar. From the balcony of the Gaddi Durbar, members of the Royal family view the activities in the square below them. Basantapur Durbar, also known as Nautale, is another palace complex in the same area. Situated at the end of Nasal Chowk, the Basantapur Durbar lies under the shelter of four roofs.

Kathmandu Durbar Square and the area surrounding it is packed with street vendors selling all sorts of goods like fruits and vegetables, shawls and blankets, sweaters and bedroom slippers and more. Indra Chowk near to Kathmandu Durbar Square has even more shops and shopping malls.
