New iPods: How Much Better Are They?
Last week Apple introduced new iPod, iPod Nano, and iPod Shuffle models. Here's what they changed.
The iPod Video was probably the least changed of the three. The 60GB model was upgraded to an 80GB player, giving you a little extra space for all those videos. Other specifications remain the same. Most important, probably, is the $50 price drop for both models, to $249 and $349 for the 30GB and 80GB players, respectively.
iPod Nano got plenty of new features. It's now available in five colors, which makes it more like the discontinued iPod Mini. The 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB players each doubled in capacity to 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB, with no increase in price. The screen is 40% brighter than the original, making it easier to see your pictures. It also has an aluminum case, making it even lighter than before, and received a 10-hour increase in battery life. That brings it to a full 24 hours without recharging your battery.
The iPod Shuffle is now even smaller than before. If you own any kind of case with a belt clip, look at it now. That belt clip is the size of the new iPod Shuffle. Simply clip it to a belt, a pocket, or anything else, plug in the headphones, and start listening. It even fits in the loose change pocket that many jeans have, with room to spare. And just when you thought media players couldn't get any smaller.
So there you have it. Those of you who told yourselves you could wait a while and get something better for the same price, pat yourself on the back. Based on these new models, it's a safe bet that Apple really likes the Nano idea, and we can expect to see more along these lines.
