Method Acting: How to Become a Character
Method acting is time-tested way to delve deep into the idiosyncrasies and mannerisms that comprise a real character. Any dedicated author should learn the basics of method acting presented in this article.
They say, "Don't judge a book by its cover." But that is exactly what an actor must count on. Because of mass media influences, certain physical attributes are linked with different behaviors. A solitary eye-patch denotes cunning, robbery and mischievousness, because it is traditionally associated with pirates. Heftiness, because of Santa Clause, can signify geniality. John Travolta banked on this knowledge and radically changed his appearance to play a burly burlesque woman in the box office hit Hairspray in 2020. Christian Bale is renowned for gaining a mass of muscle to play his lead role in Psycho, and then losing all of it plus much more when playing a suicidal insomniac in The Machinist. Take advantage of theatricality - that is the business, after all - and adjust clothing, make-up, and other accents to fit the presented image.
If Charlie Chaplin had to rely on his appearance and body language to make people laugh, Tom Kenny uses his voice to elicit delighted chuckles from small children as he portrays Spongebob Squarepants. Voice can tell nearly any story. A hoarse, raspy voice denotes power, age and authority. A thin, high voice reminds the audience of fragility. Any actor worth his salt should learn a variety of accents, voice types and voice patterns. Not all thirty-year old men have the same style of voice. If an actor come from middle-class California but must represent an abused delinquent from Detroit, she will not converse or sound the same. Learn geographic differences, lifestyle differences, and most importantly, what a specific character would sound like.
Some people stride; some strut; some shuffle. Some people guffaw; some tsk; some chortle. Every mannerism is and must be for a purpose. A man whose shoulders are hunched is a different sort of man with his head held high. The capacity to change individual mannerisms is nearly endless. Will the character point or gesture; sit or slouch; stare or look away; speak fast or speak slow; cover the cough or not? It is these differences, sometimes unconsciously noted by the audience, which separates a character from the masses. Hillary Swank is a master of this. Her starring roles in Million Dollar Baby, Amanda and Freedom Writers reveal her astounding ability to completely change her "unconscious" actions. Her little behaviors are what define her character from everybody else.
But these things cannot be accomplished without one more task: how does the character think? Understanding the noetic tendencies of a character is the key that unlocks the rest of his personality. If a character was raised agnostic but is engaged to a Christian fiancé, what happens inside her intellect? Is there tension or exploration? Identify the cognitive processes of a character; the likes and dislikes, dreams and failures - what is rational and what is irrational. Create the person that should be represented.
Acting is an art. No Oscar winner won "best actor" or "best actress" for a superficial, bland, average and typical performance. To act is to show a story. And great actors show the tale - it foreshadows, mysteries, climaxes and resolutions - apart from the script; they slowly unfold the story bit by bit by the quirks and idiosyncrasies that comprise their character.
