Singer Shows Off First “Twitter” Dress at 4G Mobile Event

British telecom EE held an event recently to announce the deployment of 4G to England, the first in that country to do so. Customers had been waiting, Mail Online says, for nearly a year for the new superfast phone service that customers in the United States and elsewhere have been enjoying for over nine months. To commemorate the event, the telecom ordered up a custom made dress for singer Nicole Scherzinger, that came embedded with LEDs that were connected wirelessly to a device that converted received Twitter messages into signal the dress could understand. The result was a flashy dress that demonstrated not just true 4G technology to the British market, but a new way to communicate using the social networking site. Mashable called the event and dress, a show stopping display of technological wizardry and high fashion.
To achieve the stunning results, dress makers started with French silk chiffon to ensure that the dress would be light and would move independently of its wearer. They next added 500 Swarovski crystals to cause the light from the LEDs to be reflected back towards those viewing it. Then finally, they stitched on 2000 very tiny LED lights which required very tiny wires to connect them all together. At the point where they all connect, in back, there is a very small junction box with a wireless chip that allows for communication with an external device. That device, Mashable says, was a simple box that allows for programming the LED lights, virtually identical to those used to control LED billboards. After that, artists were called in to assist with programming. The result is a shimmering display of colors, along with the actual words contained in Twitter messages sent to the dress from fans in attendance and those watching on television.
The dress and its wearer, Ms. Scherzinger, were brought in to bring a party atmosphere to the event, which was held at London's historic Battersea Power Station. Guests included a who's who of the British celebrity scene from politics, business and entertainment. At stake, Online says, was British pride which had taken a beating from having had to wait so long for 4G to arrive so later after it had appeared in other countries, including Australia, which has proven to be a rocky road, as many customers there have reported spotty reception with lawsuits filed suggesting the service and phone companies had overrepresented its capabilities.
The new Twitter dress may not have improved the service, but it no doubt made a big splash at the event, as did the singer wearing it, who performed in it as well, causing more and more Tweets to arrive, bringing the dress to life as she did so.
