The Only Flag Football Playbook You'll Ever Need
Here you'll find a simple, yet effective flag football playbook. This playbook is designed for 'make it up as you go' teams.
The teams I belong to are nothing like that. We struggle to fill our roster week to week. Our practices usually occur two minutes before the games start. None of us are ex-football stars. Yet, we constantly beat better flag football teams. We do this by knowing our limitations, and keeping things simple. The result of this strategy is this simple playbook.
This playbook uses the following assumptions: (1) You don't have a quarterback like Peyton Manning, (2) Your team is usually the slowest and most out of shape team in the league, (3) Your team doesn't have the time (or desire) to memorize dozens of plays, (4) Your team never practices, and (5) Your league rules require five players on the field.
If you have more or less players, simply add or remove a player from the following plays. The only players you cannot remove are the quarterback and the center.
Rule 1: Learn formations (not plays)
Let's face it: you're not Vince Lombardi (don't feel bad, neither am I). Don't worry about designing a million plays. They never work the way you think they will. Someone will run the wrong route. Or your timing will be off. Designing plays will only lead to frustration.
Rather, make sure everyone on your team knows the following three formations: (1) Split T, (2) Trips, and (3) Twins. Let's look at each of these formations in a little more detail.
The Split T Formation
The Split T formation consists of the following elements: (1) One receiver lines up on one side of the center; the other receiver lines up on the other side of the center, (2) Each receiver is about 10 - 12 yards from the center, (3) A single running back is behind the quarterback, and (4) The play gets its name because the formation looks like the letter 'T.'
The Trips Formation
The Trips formation consists of the following elements. You can do this formation either to the left or the right of the center: (1) Three receivers line up on one side of the center, (2) The closest receiver is about 10 - 12 yards from the center, and (3) There is no running back in this formation.
The Twins Formation
The Twins Formation consists of the following elements. Like the Trips Formation, you can do this formation either to the left or the right of the center: (1) Two receivers line up on one side of the center, (2) The closest receiver is about 10 - 12 yards from the center, and (3) The running back can either line up behind the quarterback or on the opposite side of the other receivers.
Rule 2: Let your receivers decide their routes
OK, your offense has agreed on the formation for your play. Now, have each of your receivers decide what they want to run.
The graphic in this article shows some examples of different routes. A word to the wise: use short routes. While everyone dreams of pulling off some long fly route, they're hard to complete. Plus, they'll exhaust your team.
Short routes, while not particually exciting, are easy to complete -- even for the worst quarterback and receiver. Short routes also allow you to keep the ball in your possession longer, which is what you want. The worse team you are, the better it is to keep the other team's offense off the field.
Use these routes frequently: (1) Quick Out: The receiver runs about 5 - 8 yards forward. The receiver then turns suddenly toward the sideline, (2) Slant: The receiver runs about 5 - 8 yards forward. The receiver then turns toward the middle of the field on a 45-degree angle, and (3) Drag/In: The receiver runs about 5 - 8 yards forward. The receiver then turns into the middle of the field at a 90-degree angle.
Use these only when necessary: (1) Deep Out: The receiver runs about 10 - 15 yards forward. This is just like the Quick Out, only deeper, (2) Flag: The receiver runs about 10 - 15 yards forward. The receiver then turns at a 45-degree angle and runs toward the sideline, and (3) Curl: The receiver runs about 10 - 15 yards forward. The receiver then stops and turns to the ball.
Use these routes only when all hope is lost: (1) Post Corner: The receiver runs about 12 - 20 yards forward. The receiver then turns at a 45-degree angle to the middle of the field for a few steps. The receiver then turns again at a 45-degree angle toward the sidelines, (2) Post: The receiver runs about 12 - 20 yards forward. The receiver then turns at a 45-degree angle to the middle of the field, and (3) Fly: The receiver runs forward and looks for the ball after about 15 yards.
Rule 3: Let your running back and center determine their routes
Once your receivers know what they're running, have your running back and center determine their routes as well. You want your running back and center to run quick, short plays. They're your safety valve -- a way to get rid of the ball in a hurry. If you don't see someone open right way, throw it to one of these players.
(1) In: The player runs forward about 5 - 8 yards and then turns"in" (or in other words, toward the middle of the field), (2) Out: The player runs forward about 5 - 8 yards and then turns "out" (or in other words, toward the sidelines), (3) Flare (for running backs only): The player runs toward the sidelines and then runs forward toward the line of scimmage, (4) Arrow: The player runs at a 45-degree angle for about 5 - 8 plays toward the sideline, and (5) Circle: The player runs toward the sidelines and then circles 5 - 8 yards around until they're in front of the quarterback.
Rule 4: Your defense will stink (and your opponent will score on you)
Flag Football's designed to allow offenses to score. The fields are short. Even lousy teams can score. With that in mind, how do you stop more athletic and prepared teams with the odds against you?
The answer: you don't. That's why ball control is so important when you're on offense. This isn't to say you just give up on defense. Just don't let it get to you when the other team scores. They will.
You'll see a number of teams try to run a variety of tricky defensive formations. Don't waste your time doing so. Rather, use these guidelines: (1) Have your most athletic player rush the quarterback, (2) Have your next most athletic player act as a safety, (3) Have the rest of your players play man-to-man on the receivers, (4) If possible, use substitues. Keep your defense fresh, (5) Watch your opponents waist. Their waist will tell you exactly where they're going, and (6) Don't get frustrated at yourself or your teammates.
Flag Football's a blast, especially if you don't take yourself too seriously. Changes are you don't have LaDainian Tomlinson's moves, even though you might be wearing his jersey.
Use these guidelines so that at least you can say you have a plan. Then, just make things up as you go. After the game, make sure to celebrate with your teammates. Flag Football's a game. Make sure you remember to treat it like one.
