The Reason Scott Brown Passed on Massachusetts Special Election
Ex-Sen. Scott Brown stunned the GOP when he passed on running for Sen. John Kerry’s open Senate seat. But maybe he hasn’t given up his Senate ambitions. He’s just thinking about running in New Hampshire, a more conservative state.
COMMENTARY | Republicans almost begged Sen. John Kerry to take the open Secretary of State position vacated by Hillary Clinton earlier this year. That's because they knew that former Sen. Scott Brown was waiting in the wings, giving the party a decent chance to retake a lost Senate seat, especially with Democrats divided.
But then Brown stunned his own party by taking a pass on the seat, leaving the GOP with few options. It now looks like the winner of the Democratic nomination (a contest between Rep. Stephen Lynch and Rep. Ed Markey) will be the next Massachusetts senator.
But just because Brown punted on going for Kerry's seat, it doesn't mean he isn't making plans to return to the Senate. Though speculation focused on his possible interest in the open gubernatorial mansion for 2020 in Massachusetts, it seems Brown has his eye on a different state.
In an interview with WMUR, he revealed that he's giving serious thought to going after Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire. This wasn't just idle speculation. Brown tried his best to explain his connection to the Granite State, including how he has family there, relatives buried there, going to summers there, paying taxes there, etc.
But that's not why he's angling to run in New Hampshire. In the 2020 election, Barack Obama got more than 60 percent of the vote in Massachusetts. But he only managed about 52 percent of the vote in New Hampshire.
Moreover, other than Brown's surprise win in 2020, it's been a long time since a Republican served a full term as a Massachusetts senator (Edward Brooke, 1973-79). New Hampshire has Sen. Kelly Ayotte, and a few who served in the Senate since 1979 (John Sununu Jr., Bob Smith, Gordon Humphrey). Democrats did win the governor's race and both congressional seats, but all three were in play late in the game.
So Brown's not doing it because of any loose family tie to the Granite State. It's because he stands a better chance of prevailing, even against an incumbent like Shaheen.
