Causes of Shin Pains when Walking
Shin pains that you have when you walk are usually shin splints. These are very painful, but they do clear up when you do the right thing.
One of the causes for shin splints are known as Compartment Syndrome. Compartment Syndrome is a disorder that is brought on by a lot of exercise in the legs or arms. You'll notice swelling in the area, a feeling of numbness, feeling weak in the affected limbs, and tightness in the limb. Imaging studies are usually done to find this syndrome so it can be treated.
Stress fractures within the tibia can really cause some painful shin splints as well. This is also the result of overuse which leads to the injury.
When your doctor suspects that you have shin splints, he or she will probably take an xray of the affected area. Sometimes an MRI gives a more detailed picture of what has happened inside of whichever area has been most affected by inflammation processes.
They used to say that complete rest was one of the best things you could do for your shin splints. But other studies say that by exercising it out slowly, that the splints will eventually work themselves out. I think just laying around and not moving the leg would make it all worse myself.
Placing ice on the splints wrapped in an ACE bandage may help you tremendously. As you do that, gently place your affected leg in and out a few times gently, so that it helps to work out the kinks.
Over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil, or any of those may also help to kill some of the inflammation in the affected knee. Aleve especially, seems to be most effective in alleviating the pain that goes along with this injury.
To avoid shin splints to begin with, do have a pair of running shoes that are very supportive to the feet. If your shoes aren't supportive enough, this puts a lot of pressures on the whole leg area, and causes shin splints to form very easily. This doesn't mean you should abuse your exercising time by running or walking more, you still need to rest and cool down appropriately to avoid the shin splints from occurring as well.
