How to Make a Great Running Playlist
Runners know how important a good running playlist is to their workout. Learn the best techniques to crafting a stellar playlist.
Don't put your best song first in your running playlist.
The first song on your running playlist is the one that you're going to get sick of first. It should be a solid running song, one that doesn't make you cringe while starting your workout, but one that you won't mind skipping after the first few times you use it. It doesn't have to be particularly fast, as you'll still be warming up while it plays. Consider rotating songs to the top spot of your running playlist every week to keep it fresh.
Start your best running songs three to five spots down in your running playlist.
Don't bring out the heavy guns too soon. While you do want some upbeat tracks to get your feet moving, you don't want to use up the best of your running playlist early in your workout. Leaving five songs (or less, depending on how far you're running) before the highlights of your playlist will keep them insulated from overuse.
Tailor your running playlist to your workout.
While many running playlists can fit almost any exercise routine, specialized workouts require specialized lists. Playlists for long runs can have longer and slower songs that take up as much time as possible; think "Free Bird" and "Stairway to Heaven." Running playlists for uptempo workouts have no room for fluff. They have to be hitting hard from track one; check out my list of the Ten Best Running Songs of All Time and The Best Music for Running: Songs and Genres for suggestions.
Don't put the best songs right in a row.
Self-control is difficult while running, so optimize your running playlist to keep your best running songs fresh for as long as you can. Intersperse the top-shelf songs with some average ones.
Don't listen to your running playlist when you aren't running.
Running playlists wear out fast enough as it is; don't make it worse by listening to them outside of your workouts. It may be tempting to play some of your best running songs when you're not on the track, but you must resist the urge.
Next, of course, you need the best running music to fill your running playlist. Check out my tutorial: How to Find the Best Running Music for Your Workout.
