Women's Learn to Run at the Running Room - Week 3

2's and 1's this week -- big jump for me!

Running for two minutes sucked.... It really did, and there is just no polite way to say it.

Let me try best to give you an example. You know how self conscious you feel when you cry in front of others? Especially when you just let it fly, and you do what my cousin calls, "the ugly cry". Your eyes water, your nose runs, you choke, you sputter and can't really get your words out?

Well... I didn't cry at my class. However, that is how I felt I "looked" about one minute, forty seconds into each set. Exhausted, weary and gasping for air.

I had to constantly remind myself to slow down my pace. Even though I did slow down, doubling my running time from one to two minutes on those sets did not happen subtly for me. My body actually noticed and was asking "what the hay?"

However, on a more positive note, when the run ended, I had a real sense of accomplishment. However, when I looked in the mirror in the ladies room at the running room, I looked like I had run a marathon. My pony tail was disheveled, my face was red, and my eyes looked a little weary. I had both shin splint and my calves felt like tight rubber bands.

I stretched my calves gently but persistently throughout the evening and gradually felt normal again that evening.

The clinic that night coincidentally was running injuries. We had a chiropractor come in to discuss running related injuries and symptoms to watch out for. It seemed to me that most of the injuries they spoke of stem back to not stretching your calves.

Now, whether I am running or not during the day, I am making it a regular practice to stretch my calves on the stairs in my home by putting my toes on the stair, and then dropping my ankles until I feel a beautiful stretch in my calf muscle. Brilliant!

Even though it is only two minute intervals to some people, to me it was an achievement. It was a difficult jump for me, but I completed all my sets regardless and I lived to write the article.
