Review of the Garmin Nuvi 205 Series or Scarlett
Scarlett is the name my husband gave his new navigation system for his car. Scarlett is helpful, but annoying. Hubby just loves her though.
When he and I are out and about driving around these days, the incessant voice of Scarlett interrupting me fills the car until I'm ready to punch her in her little black box. My husband even gave her a little European edge by pushing the button that allows her to talk with a British accent. However, grudgingly I will admit that Scarlett does give us a lot of information. Just the other day, we wanted to go out to dinner and we wanted some Italian food. We consulted with Scarlett, and after pushing a couple of buttons, up on the screen popped the names and addresses of several Italian restaurants in the area where we were driving. We selected one, and Scarlett gently guided us street by street until we reached our destination.
That's another one of my little gripes. Maybe it's my imagination, but Scarlett has a very seductive voice. She may be saying "turn left at the next street", but all I hear is "C'mon big boy, make that left turn at the next street and I'll be very pleased". I swear I think I heard her say that. Oh, he turned left at the next street all right. If she told him then to turn right and plow into that brick wall, I honestly think he'd try it. Scarlett seems to have that kind of hold over him.
What really annoyed me was when it was time to go home. He has our home programmed into Scarlett so that all he has to do is push the button that says "home", and Scarlett, with her seductive voice, tells him every single turn to take in order to get him home. It doesn't matter that he knows the way home. He just likes her talking to him along the way. It annoys me because I'm talking to him all the way home in the car too and he's smiling. So I know he's listening to her and not me. Don't you think?
But to be fair, I have to tell you that Scarlett has many fine features built into her. The screen on the little black box is very easy to read. All the many streets and highways that you're travelling on are marked clearly, as well as any bodies of water you may cross. We even noticed that a double highway is shown as exactly that. The path you're travelling on is shown as a magenta colored line so it tells you exactly where you are at any given time, with arrows pointing you in the right direction at all times. There is even a feature that tells you what speed you're going, and what the speed limit actually is. So if you're trying to drive safely and please Scarlett, you'll love having that feature. I also like how the streets are named as well, so you always know where you are.
Another feature that is helpful is this. Say you want to go to the Taj Mahal on Saturday afternoon. Scarlett will start out giving you driving directions. And say since you've been to the Taj Mahal many times before, you would rather take the scenic route to get there this time rather than what Scarlett is saying which is a more direct route. So you decide to disobey Scarlett. With a disapproving voice, Scarlett says one word. And that one word is "Recalculating". She then pauses, and tension fills the air just a little bit. Then she quickly decides to forgive you and puts on her pleasant voice again and gives you directions from the scenic route that you're driving on. So you do have some control, if you can ward off her wily advances.
My husband should be writing this review since he's more familiar with the many wonderful features that Scarlett has stored in the confines of her little black box. I will say that he's more than pleased with his newfound toy. Just as long as she stays safely inside the little screen, I guess I can deal with her voice luring my husband down roads to only God knows where.
I know what I want for my next birthday. I want a Garmin Nuvi 205 series for MY car. I'll name him ...... Brad. Yes, Brad. And I'll have fun disobeying Brad just for the hell of it.
