Review: Tie Buddies
The way Tie Buddies works is this; you place them on the shoe laces and the little plastic pieces allow your child to skip a couple steps while tying her shoes.
While working on teaching her how to tie her shoes (something she almost has but still has a few problems with), we decided to give her an easier method and picked up a package of Tie Buddies. While a solution to her problem, I will say they aren't as good as I expected them to be.
The way Tie Buddies work is this; you place them on the shoe laces and the little plastic pieces allow her to skip a couple steps while tying her shoes. All she really has to do is form a couple "bunny ears," loop them and pull one underneath. She does this twice and the shoe is tied.
When we first put these on her shoes, I had some doubts about them. But, after she was able to tie her shoes by herself several times without us coaching her, I will admit I was impressed with them and thought they were one of the best inventions for parents ever.
However, while the Tie Buddies do make it easier for her to tie her shoes, I also have noticed a few issues with them.
First, when she uses the Tie Buddies (or one of us tries to tie her shoes with them), I noticed the slip knot that is formed doesn't get very tight. As a result, her shoes come untied a lot more than they did when we simply tied them for her the old fashioned way. This is even the case when we purposely double knot them.
I've also noticed that, after she started using the Tie Buddies, she seems to have more knots in her laces than she did before. And, I'm not talking knots that can be undone easily. I'm talking the kind of knots that you have to dig a fork out of the drawer just so you have something to get inside it and loosen it up. I believe this is a result of the laces coming untied only partially and her trying to re-tie them.
I feel this is a unique tool to help parents of young kids with their shoe laces. But, I don't think the Tie Buddies are a long-term replacement for simply sitting down with your child and teaching them to tie their shoes the right way.
