Hello Kitty Armband Award
My own little opinion on who deserves a badge of shame.
Before I explain the merits of this week's award, I'll explain what it is. In case you haven't heard, the Thai police force will now issue hot pink armbands with Hello Kitty décor to it's officers as punishment for misconduct. Yep. It's true. I love this idea. I don't know if it'll work (a past attempt with plaid armbands did not), but that's beside the point for my purposes. It's given as a badge of shame. If we put aside the possibility of offensive gender implications, I think we all get the message of the Hello Kitty Armband.
That said, why are the Democrats worthy of the award this month? Well, first of all, it was going to be a weekly award, but I'm too lazy for that. Why not the Republicans as well? Let's just say that wouldn't be fair to the other contestants. More importantly, the Democrats bear the larger responsibility for reigning in the expansion of executive power we've seen over the past seven years. Or perhaps I should say, they have much less of an excuse like, for example, agreeing with the president on this one. Expanding executive power is not a partisan issue however. At least it shouldn't be. Nor is this particular expansion of power a partisan issue. For one thing, one need only imagine a president from a despised political party in office to realize this. For another, if this expansion violates the Constitution, as I'm pretty sure it does, then it's a concern for everyone.
I know, maybe you're thinking of Barry Bonds; but I gotta say, for what? I mean, you can't fault him for actually breaking the record I don't think. For not fessing up to alleged use of performance enhancers? Maybe. But to tell the truth, that doesn't bother me all that much. Geez oh whiz, the guy's hit over seven hundred home runs. Seven hundred! I don't care what he's been taking, that's a lot of home runs. Plus, the practice is obviously so widespread I doubt you could find a player who hasn't done something similar at some point in their career. Oh, and plus, it's just baseball.
The rule of law is another matter. So Democrats in Congress, this week's Hello Kitty Armband Award goes to you. Wear them with shame.
p.s. OK, I'll admit it makes me a little queasy to think maybe Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron used the equivalent of steroids for their day (recall, for instance, that Coke used to have coke in it). Luckily, we can all remain ignorant on that score.
