Cool Runnings: A Movie Review
The Jamaican Bobsledding team heads to Calgary Canada to compete in Winter Olympics for the first time.
Irving "Irv" Blitzer (played by John Candy), having been shamed and disgraced by cheating, retires from the American Bobsledding Team and sets up as a bookie in Jamaica. A sprinter, Derice Bannock (played by Leon Robinson) comes to him after failing to qualify for the Summer Olympics with hopes of starting up a Jamaican Bobsledding Team.
Blitzer, after flat out refusing, then trying to sabotage the recruitment by showing film footage of devastating crashes, finally gives in after a group of four Jamaicans refuse to give up. The training begins and three months later they are headed to Calgary.
Being completely out of their elements makes for great comedy, especially when they first show up at Calgary from Jamaica. The movie then revolves around the four sledders trying to fit in, not only in the Winter Olympics, but also trying to get their own team to stay on the same page. The underdogs finally make it and are going for gold in the Olympics.
While this was a really good comedy movie, the four main stars had very little experience in films up until then. The acting sometimes seems forced, but, the laughs come at a quick pace thanks to the genius of John Candy who really helped to make this film memorable. While it may not be the best sporting movie ever created, I do recommend it for your library for the comedy, if nothing else.
I think, this Disney movie will definitely stand the test of time, and I give it 4 stars out of 5 for showing that underdogs do truly exist and can make you see the world in a different way. Cool Runnings is one of those moviesbased on a true story. While some of those movies stretch a bit farfrom the truth, this movie takes a good caricature of the contemptthe first Jamaican Bobsledding team took on their trip to the 1988Winter Olympics. All in all this makes for one of the best sportingmovies I had seen in a long time, even if the acting can be a littleharsh at times.
