Globalization and free trade have often been the speculation of countless heated debates. From economics to the environment advocates and opponents hold varying views as different as water and fire. It is my belief that free trade has done great things for our developing neighbors and when I researched its impact on the environment I found that many of the biggest and best multinational corporations have brought "green" across the border.
The star of my research was Delphi Corporation, "a global supplier of mobile electronics and transportation systems (Delphi.com, 2020)." Delphi Mexico, a branch of the Detroit based corporation, is the "largest maquiladora operation in Mexico, more than 100,000 employees in 80 manufacturing facilities throughout the country (Outsourced Logistics, 2020)." There business practices and commitment to corporate social responsibility are well noted and should be emulated.
Often the reason a company chooses to outsource is so it can capitalize on some comparative advantage that a host country has. Delphi is not a stranger to this idea by any means. It has been operating in Mexico since the late seventies utilizing the lower cost of labor offered by Mexico's workforce (Garrett, 2005). By organizing its plants along the border it makes transportation much simpler. Additionally Delphi supplies a great deal of parts to auto manufacturers in Mexico.
Delphi has been faced with multiple different environmental challenges and yet they have continuously stepped up to the plate using creativity and ingenuity to reduce waste and energy use. In the late nineties Delphi was disposing of tons of hazardous paint sludge each year. Top help combat this they began the installation of paint sludge dewatering systems in their plants. From just one plant this equipment "resulted in the recycling of 144,762 gallons of water over eight months and a 90-percent reduction in the weight of paint sludge sent for disposal (Corporate Social Responsibility News, 2002)." Another such example of Delphi's environmental concern is demonstrated by the tight commitment to running as "lean" as possible. Delphi has invested a great deal into maintaining its factories abilities to limit materials to just a day's worth on hand at a time allowing for minimal waste and reducing its impact on the environment. Their "just enough and no more approach" has also significantly reduced overhead, lowering the overall costs of production (Garrett, 2005).
Initially the cost of these upgrades and dewatering systems were pricey. In a very short time the decrease in waste and energy use along with the increase in availability of recycled resources and consumer confidence helped save and even make more money for Delphi. Consumers like to work with people that seem to care about them and their environment and by consistently achieving high marks for its outstanding commitment to protecting the environment, year after year Delphi is awarded and recognized for her efforts.
There are many things to consider in business. We need to focus on sales and the bottom line. We need to be certain of our target markets and do what we must to increase our market share. While we get caught up in all of this it is equally pertinent to keep at the fore front of our minds the great importance of corporate social responsibility. Delphi's environmental principles include considering the "environmental impact from the beginning (Delphi.Com, 2020)." This simple creed makes much more sense than trying to fix a problem. As the great Benjamin Franklin once said "an ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure." Never has that saying been more prudent.
