Genocide Victims Remembered Through Worldwide White Armband Day
People around the world not only mourn the victims of the Prijedor genocide, but also seek to educate those who are unaware that genocide is more current than they think.
COMMENTARY | On May 31, Stop Genocide Denial and non-Serbian victims around the world ask you to help them spread awareness of the genocide that took place in Prijedor in 1992. On May 31, 1992, non-Serbian residents were forced to mark their homes and bodies with a white sheet or a white armband if going outside of the home. This was to be the beginning of an extermination effort akin to the atrocities that took place in the Nazi death camps during World War II.
The non-Serbians seek to inform the world of those atrocities by wearing the white armbands with a bittersweet pride rather than in fear. The pride is for who they are. It is, however, a bittersweet pride as those who survived are reminded of those who did not or of the horrors that may not have killed them, but instead left them with nightmares and a very real concept of just how cruel the world can be.
According to the Prijedor Report by the United Nations Security Council, it is difficult to estimate just how many non-Serbian residents died in this act of genocide. Whole towns were taken into custody. Those who fled to the forest were often shot on sight, with not even a grave to mark their death. In general, it was the males who were targeted for death and torture. The women were raped and abused in a variety of ways. Some of the captives died in transport, while others starved in the camps. Based on the census the year before the genocide and general estimates of population ratios, it is thought that tens of thousands of the non-Serbian population was either killed, or somehow managed to escape.
You don't have to be a victim of this atrocity to show your support. Indeed, it is the very lack of awareness that causes situations like this to be able to happen. You can put a white sheet over your window or wear a white armband and educate those who ask you to explain. The world is still reeling from the shock of what happened at the Nazi death camps, and declared we would never let such a thing happen again. But it did. We can prevent such things if we educate ourselves about them. Even if you don't know anyone who suffered from this event, put a white sheet over your window just to celebrate the fact that you can do so free from worry of persecution, unlike those that have reason to personally mourn the days of the Prijedor genocide.
