New Computerized Pump for Chemotherapy Reduces Side Effects
A computer operated portable pump that is small enough to easily fit into a fanny pack is gradually revolutionizing the way in which chemotherapy is administered to cancer patients.
According to Dr. William Hrushesky, who is the senior clinical investigator at the Dorn VA Medical Center in South Carolina and a pioneering chronobiologist, - "this technology allows for larger doses to be delivered more frequently, with higher efficacy and lower toxicity. It's kinder, gentler and at the same time, more aggressive and effective."
While administering chemotherapy with this pump, the timing of infusion is determined after considering several factors. The biological uniqueness of the drug that is being used for chemotherapy and the time of cell division of the particular type of cancer cells are carefully considered while deciding on the time of the treatment.
According to Keith Block, who is the MD, of the Block Center for Integrated Cancer Care "This creates a better kill rate for the cancer and less toxicity to the healthy cells, because the healthy cells of the patient are generally at rest when the cancer cells are most active, or dividing." He also explains that "The infusion of the chemotherapy drug using this pump starts slowly and ratchets up, hour by hour. It slowly increases to the middle point of the cycle, peaks, infuses most of the drug and then slowly ratchets back down, to no drug, where the cycle is completed. We have often found that patients receiving their chemotherapy this way reduce what would have been recurring side effects of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue."
According to the studies that are published in the medical journals like Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lancet Oncology, and Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and Chronobiology International, this ground breaking technology significantly reduces the toxicity and improves the chance of survival. This is an important aspect related to the chemotherapy treatment as many patients stop continuing with the treatment simply because of the debilitation that is caused by the chemotherapy treatment. Survey reports shows that about one third patients abandon the chemotherapy process because of the severity of the side effects. Therefore, the pump will help the cancer patients to cope with the chemotherapy treatment more easily. Being a small pump it also allows the patients to take the drug while performing normal activities.
