Running Lights

A poem of industry and escape.

untrustworthy sources, the sirens

went off

wailing, and a helicopter chopped

familiarly, the noise in the air

tearing at the low sky

tearing at the air as at a throat

to suffocate - thump thump thump thump thump thump ... ...

subsiding with the alarms.

a cry

from the local train

sounds against the far side of town

near enough, one thinks, to run for,

or dream after the running:

clack clack, the distance. railroad ties

run over shallowly by lightest tons

of steel, this iron mississippi,

grooved irrevocably into the earth

fastened by World War One labor:

great metals, buzzing threads of industry

and many men's blood run into them,

grooved

as a bastion of magnets

exploding onto an unexpectant landscape

inspiring metal with purpose,

these earthbound, earthbinding

vehicles of industry

not escaping at all but attempting

to lay the way for escape.

the water begins too, downhill,

the cry of the locomotive gone,

a path inevitable as the decline

of species,

the declination

of shade onto lawns

in the evening, following

brightly white afternoons,

and that deep murmur

is the tortoise-voice

roughly inured to life

in the more obscure offices

of a world;

the placid rumble-tone of basements;

the sustained placidity

of Basic Reality.

beads drip and splash, globular

reminding the herb of its original god:

the dog of its running days:

man of his fate:

sky of reflections:

seas of nothing and home.

a trickle determines itself

beneath visible sections of town.

a trickle also beyond the disagreement

of escape.

it takes

a cyclical turning

into a drainpipe

like red-and-white ambulance-

light-wheeling signals above

the emergencies,

rising from the banishment and luck

of catastrophe, too possible to be believed,

too real.

the water itself

is an urgency

calling upon each of the town

for a penny's respite

from the incremental, and

gradual storm, for a healthy

attention that gives a boy a village

and more, a response

his crying-of-wolf beyond disbelief;

the town learning to accept liars

as themselves and vice versa,

the alarm of a normal fallible boy

not more or less

trustworthy than any other boy

man girl grandfather or god.

the sound fading slowly as a last train

falls away, past recollection of sense,

longing dream-lights of unsurprised dreamers

attempting to track its echo

along the direction of morning.
