Avatar or - No Connection Under This Number?
We are often not really connected to our environment and the people around us and many long for the feeling of being part of one whole.
"Avatar" is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people.
Everybody who has seen the film was probably fascinated by the well made special effects and the detail of the planet, the fauna and flora and everything in between, the shining plants and night and the fantastic animals that live there. And probably also by the community and connectedness that the Na'vi to each other and the world around them.
What is very well made is the conflict that you can feel between our world where profit is the most important and we try to exploit nature and each other wherever possible in a grey world and the world of the Na'vi where each creature is treated with respect in and everybody is part of the whole.
Sounds like a familiar story? Who is the western part of the world can say that he feels connected to his neighbour? The society he lives in or the nature that sourrounds him and he (or she of course!) is actually part of...we tend to forget that. And how many people feel actually disconnected? We all live more in more in a virtual reality; have virtual lives, bank accounts and friends.
A friend of mine (not a virtual one) who saw the film said: "I actually would have wanted to stay there!" A fascinating world, where people are part of nature, where you had to learn a strange language and could dive into a strange culture, where adventure can be experienced and the purpose of the individual is the best interest of the society he/she lives in.
Fantastic! But actually for that we also do not have to go that far: Why not try to give our lives a bit more purpose, why not do something good for the people around you, why not put some more thoughts to the nature around you and why not read something about the fascinating culture your neighbour has you have never ever talked to before...
