How Can You Keep Dry in a Vehicle with a Canvas Top? by Using Scotchgard to Seal It!
Here is my detailed instructions on how and why I use Scotchgard Fabric Protector on my Jeep Wrangler soft top.
So naturally when the heavy rains came, and the factory soft top leaked right through, I was quite surprised and disappointed! When the rain is just moderate, and you have the heater on, there is moisture which forms on the inside of the roof, and this moisture forms little droplets which will drip all over when you are driving. The same thing occurred when snow was left on the roof and rear cover, and it dripped while the heater was running.
The factory top was removed after the windows cracked and the zippers were starting to break down, and by using this Scotchgard™ treatment, the "BESTOP" brand replacement top, has held up much better than the original factory top did.
As a result of these early learning experiences, I have been using Scotchgard™ Fabric Protector to waterproof the canvas top on my Jeep Wrangler for many years now. I also treat the soft cargo cover with the Scotchgard™ spray as well.
I would guess that the one thing which made me try using Scotchgard™ on the soft top of the Jeep was that it has always worked well for me when I applied it to my canvas and leather shoes. I have not seen information on using this chemical for this exact application, but it has been keeping my hat dry inside this Jeep Wrangler for a long time now.
I apply this chemical in three thin coats, and let it dry for 2 or more hours in between coats. These water proofing applications last so well that I only apply this treatment to the canvas top every six months. It definitely helps keep water from leaking into the cab. I put a little extra on the stitches around the edges, and this seems to seal up those troublesome areas fairly well.
If you are interested in trying this on your canvas topped vehicle, it is wise to perform a quick color test on an inconspicuous spot somewhere on the top. Mine was on the rear window frame just above the cargo area. If the spot does not change the color of your top, then get at least two cans of this ScotchGard™ Fabric Protector, and follow these simple steps for a successful application of this amazing waterproofing chemical.
The main ingredients in ScotchGard™ are Acetone, Isopropanol, Aliphatic Hydrocarbon, Carbon Dioxide Propellant, Urethane Polymer, and Polysiloxanes. These chemicals are delivered via a non toxic spray from a metal spray can. It has a fairly strong odor, and can sting your eyes, so wear safety glasses, stand up wind, and spray only at arms length, and aim away from your body and face.
Step one; Wash the top really well to remove any dirt which has accumulated since your last wash.
Step two; dry the top thoroughly, and rewash if any dirty spots are visible.
Step Three; after the top has dried for at least two hours, apply your first coat of the 3M Protector all over the top in wide smooth even strokes. Allow this coat to dry for at least two hours.
Step Four; apply second coat, and let it dry for two hours at least.
Step Five; apply third and final coat, you need to apply it thin because more is not always better.
Step Six; allow the top to dry before driving the vehicle since the fumes can linger for quite a while once done.
Step Seven; write into your owners manual, or your favorite excel spreadsheet showing the date that this job was done, this way you can repeat it six months from now.
If you wish to test a spot to see how well the top repels water, get a spray bottle filled with water, and spray some water onto the roof and see which way it flows. If the stream of water runs off the vehicle, then you should be in good shape for the next six months or so. If anything does leak through the top, then you should go back and start at step two, and repeat through all of the steps again.
The treatment will not last quite as long if you were to take your car through the automatic car wash too frequently. If you wash your car by hand, and the top is not too dirty, you can easily bypass scrubbing the roof, which will prevent the Scotchgard™ from being washed away.
If you are doing this for the first time, I actually went inside the vehicle and sprayed one thin coat on the inside of the soft top as well. Make sure you store any remaining chemical safely, and be sure to properly dispose of the can when it is empty!
