The Best Replacement Quarterbacks in NFL History

Like Steve Young filling the big shoes of Joe Montana, Matt Cassel has to do the almost impossible and step in for Tom Brady. But it can be done, as several other quarterbacks have filled in for injured starters and achieved stunning success.

Tom Brady
The only thing stopping some Patriots fans from going in a four-month coma is that Tom Brady already did what Matt Cassel is trying to do. Brady stepped in when Drew Bledsoe suffered a grave injury very early in the season. But Cassel inherits the Patriots in the midst of their dynasty, while Brady inherited a Patriots team that was picked to go nowhere with Bledsoe. Brady was far from the giant he is today, but he did enough to lead the Patriots to the Super Bowl and beyond. The rest is a history that is on hold right now.

Jake Delhomme
Delhomme was an unknown backup quarterback for the largely unknown Carolina Panthers in 2003. When starter Rodney Peete got hurt, Delhomme stepped in and led the Panthers to a surprise playoff berth. Delhomme then came into his own with upsets of the Rams and Eagles in the playoffs. After that, all Delhomme did as quarterback is almost beat Tom Brady himself in the Super Bowl. Delhomme nearly became a Tom Brady himself, but he only has one NFC championship game to his credit since.

Trent Dilfer
Dilfer was best known as a disappointing quarterback for Tampa Bay before 2000. With the Baltimore Ravens, Dilfer eventually replaced Tony Banks when the Ravens offense became too embarrassing. Under Dilfer, the Ravens still struggled on offense, but their legendary defense kept Dilfer in check. Dilfer rode that defense to the Super Bowl, winning it all against the Giants in his former home of Tampa Bay. Dilfer is not remembered as the reason the Ravens won the Super Bowl, but he still came in to keep things in check while the defense wasn't on the field.

Vince Ferragamo
Ferragamo is one of the weaker big replacement quarterbacks, but he almost achieved a huge place in history. In 1979, Ferragamo took over as quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, winning in spite of terrible numbers. Despite his struggles, Ferragamo took the Rams to the Super Bowl against the final great Pittsburgh Steelers team of the 70's. After three quarters, Ferragamo had the Rams lead 19-17, on the verge of an upset that would have rivaled Rams-Patriots and Patriots-Giants today. But the Steelers finally rallied to complete their dynasty and bring Ferragamo back to earth.

Jeff Hostetler
Phil Simms's injury looked to finish the Giants in 1990. Backup Jeff Hostetler then arose and finished the regular season for the Giants. However, the Giants were big underdogs to the two-time champion 49'ers in the NFC title game. Yet Hostetler outdid Simms and gave the Giants a stunning victory. In the Super Bowl, before Scott Norwood's kick, Hostetler helped the Giants stay on the field for 40 minutes, long enough for a 20-19 win. Hostetler parlayed that victory into a starting job with the Raiders for several years.

Earl Morrall
Morrall has been a big time replacement quarterback at least three times in his career. In 1968, Morrall replaced an injured Johnny Unitas for the Baltimore Colts. Morrall not only stepped in for the legend, he won the MVP and made the Colts such a big favorite in Super Bowl III before that fateful game. Two years later, Morrall had to fill in for Unitas again, but this time he took the Colts to a Super Bowl title. Two more years later, Morrall was with the 1972 Miami Dolphins and had to become the starter after Bob Griese got injured. Morrall did okay enough not to lose a game that year.

Jim Plunkett
Plunkett seemed to be a washed up ex-Heisman trophy quarterback heading into 1980 with the Raiders. Once starter Dan Pastorini was injured, Plunkett got a second wind. Thanks to Plunkett, the Raiders made history as the first team to win the Super Bowl as a wild card. Plunkett became Super Bowl MVP when he finished the job against the Eagles. But like Morrall, Plunkett went on to do it a second time, replacing the Raiders starter in 1983 and helping the Raiders win another Super Bowl.

Kurt Warner
The Rams were hoping for success in 1999 with Trent Green before his injury in the preseason. Kurt Warner became the starter, despite being best known as an Arena Football quarterback. Warner then became best known as the Cinderella story of 1999, becoming an MVP and turning the Rams into the greatest offense in years. Warner completed the miracle with an MVP performance in the thrilling Super Bowl 34 vs the Titans. Warner seemed destined to repeat his success two years later, but was stopped by new Cinderella story Tom Brady in 2001.

Doug Williams
Williams battled Redskins quarterback Jay Schroder for a starting job, as well as stereotypes about black quarterbacks. But Schroder broke down near the end of the 1987 season, leaving Williams in charge for good. Williams made history by taking the Redskins for the Super Bowl, then silenced all doubters with a Super Bowl rout of Denver. Williams's place in history is still intact, all from being able to come off the bench.

Steve Young
Young had to fill the biggest shoes imaginable for the 49'ers. Young had become a well known backup to Joe Montana, but had to take over for good after Montana's crippling injury in the 1990 NFC title game. Young became an MVP within two years of becoming the full time starter, but it took Young two more years to officially become a legend in his own right, winning Super Bowl 29 to take the monkey off his back. Though Young's ultimate success wasn't as sudden or surprising as the others, he proved to be a legendary successor to the most popular pre-Farve quarterback of all time, which is no easy feat.
