Why Writing is a Dangerous Profession
Sure, working at a construction site can be dangerous. Donning a police uniform in the big city can certainly be hazardous to one's health. And I daresay the Marines aren't playing it too safe fighting those insurgents over in Iraq.
Nearsightedness. Most writers are nearsighted because we are constantly reading and writing, looking at things very close to our eyes. This damages our vision, and we eventually have difficulty seeing things that are distant. That is why many of us writers require glasses or contacts. We need them for driving, for television, for everyday life. As we get older, our glasses will become thicker (unless, of course, we get that Lasix surgery). Nearsightedness is but one reason that writing is such a dangerous profession.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. We writers are also at risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. The repetitive motions of typing on a keyboard can ultimately result in this unfortunate medical condition that can lead to pain and muscle weakness in the forearm and hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome can increase the risk of bone fractures and dislocation from trauma, and could even lead to deformity. Carpal tunnel syndrome is yet another reason that writing is such a dangerous profession.
Paper Cuts. A paper cut occurs when a piece of paper slices a person's skin. We writers, who handle paper all day every day, are constantly at risk. Papers cuts are surprisingly painful because they stimulate a large number of skin surface pain receptors in a very small area of skin. Since these shallow cuts usually do not bleed much, the pain receptors remain exposed to open air, resulting in continued pain. And these cuts most frequently occur in the fingers, which just happen to have the greatest concentration of sensory receptors on the body.
Starvation. Starvation causes permanent organ damage and ultimately leads to death. And it is quite possibly one of the most painful ways to die. Ever heard of a starving construction worker? A starving police officer? How about a starving Marine? I think not. But I'm sure everyone has heard the term "starving writer." Starvation can result from bad writing, writer's block, rejections from publishers, and low offers on content. And the risk of starvation makes writing a very dangerous profession, indeed.
