How Omega-3's Turn into 'Marijuana' in Your Body
We have all heard how beneficial it is to incorporate omega-3's into our diets. Reasons such as: it helps reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, lowers cholesterol and helps with joint pain have all been expressed. The question is why?
It's Called a "Drug-Store" for a Reason
Would you still down those omega-3 pills if you knew they turn into a marijuana-like compound in the body? Now, I am not trying to scare people away from taking omega-3's or incorporating the foods that contain them (Omega-3 Sources), I am simply getting to the reasoning behind their beneficial traits. I can hear you asking in your head "how come I don't feel high after taking an omega-3 pill, or eating fish?". This is where the balancing act performed by your body comes in. Moderation is key.
Marijuana (Cannabis) from Omega-3's
The normal human brain has more cannabinoid receptors than G-protein-coupled receptors ("the other" type of receptor). Our bodies were meant to respond to compounds that contain cannabinoids, such as endocannabinoids, aka marijuana, made in our bodies from omega-3 fatty acids. I hope you reread that last sentence. Yes, your body converts omega-3 fatty acids into endocannabinoids. Without getting too scientific, the bottom line is that our body is either in a pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory state based on our overall health and balance. The pro-inflammatory state consists of conditions such as Rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, chronic colds, weight gain, etc. When a deficiency of omega-3 presents itself, a more pro-inflammatory state occurs and all of the benefits of these fatty acids are no longer seen.
Getting High off of Fish?
Back to your question about why you do not get "high" after eating fish, simply relies on the fact that there are different levels of euphoria. The fact that you ever feel hungry means to a certain extent you are "high" in the world of cannabis. Ever wonder why after you exercise you feel all happy inside, despite the fact that your legs are screaming? How about the pleasure you feel while eating a fatty doughnut? All of these responses rely on the human body's endocannabinoid system.
The bottom line? Omega-3's are good for you not simply because they benefit you -- they are good because they help the body favor the anti-inflammatory system by producing more endocannabinoids.
