Creative Treadmill Workouts
Walking on a treadmill can seem tedious, but it is possible inject some life into your treadmill workout with a combination of strength and cardio routines.
Whatever your fitness level, the treadmill can help you increase your aerobic capacity. Some of other benefits of using the treadmill include increased balance, coordination and overall strength. Norma Shectman, The American Council of Exercise's Group Fitness Instructor of the Year recommends the following twelve week routine of alternating moves to keep your treadmill workout fresh. Here are some examples of the types of treadmill workouts that you can do:
The Cardio Workout: In this treadmill workout, you will use the "talking" test. If you can speak during this exercise , but are slightly out of breath, you've set the right aerobic pace. Aerobic activity is sustained at a base level for an increasing length of time over a four week period.
Speed Intervals: After warming up, alternate between a moderate and fast pace, increasing the duration and intensity of your "fast" walk as your fitness level improves.
Incline Intervals: This treadmill workout can be quite challenging, as it involves an alternating series of moderate to fast walks on an incline. The greater the incline, the more intense the workout will be.
Cardio Strength Mix: This workout involves a series of lunges, squats and side steps off of the treadmill, in addition to the cardio portion of the routine.
Power Mix: This treadmill routine involves a combination of faster, more strenuous walks with incline intervals.
Shectman recommends a weekly rotation of these five treadmill routines combined with two days of rest to allow your body to recover. As the weeks progress, duration and power is increased slightly to accommodate the increased cardio base. It is also important to note that a five minute warm-up and cool down period precede and follow each workout. The warm-up allows your body to ease into a state of exertion without undue stress. The cool down prevents excessive lactic acid build-up in your muscles, thus preventing soreness.
With any exercise program, it is important to build a fitness base. Slow, steady and sustained exercise will yield more long term results than a short, but intense burst of enthusiasm. To really see results, you need to exercise slightly above your baseline or comfort level. By engaging in physical activity beyond what you are normally accustomed to, your body is shocked into burning fat and calories. As you progress through your treadmill workout, listen to what your body is telling you. If you are simply strolling along, your workout is probably not intense enough to yield significant gain. If you are gasping for air, you are probably overdoing it. Find that comfortable medium, sustain it and work your way up from there.
The beauty of the treadmill is that it is so easy to master. If you know how to walk, you can use this piece of fitness equipment. Using the treadmill is a great way to ease yourself into a exercise routine that will certainly yield results, for both fitness experts and novices alike.
