Choosing a Location for Your First Marathon
Once you have made the exciting but daunting decision to run a marathon, you then have to decide exactly where you are going to do it. This article provides some tips on how to choose an enjoyable first marathon experience!
First, I recommend reading as many reviews as you can from runners who have actually completed the race that you are thinking about running. MarathonGuide.com is a great site for reading unbiased race reviews. You will read about the good, the bad, and the ugly of each race. You will learn a lot more than you ever could from the official race website. If you are intrigued by the idea of running a particular marathon, but it gets horrible reviews, it's probably time to move on and start looking for another race.
Next, it is very important to take into consideration the climate where you are training and the climate at the race location. For example, I do not train well when it is warm and humid outside. Living in North Carolina, this means that I try to avoid doing serious training in the summer because the long runs are simply too draining. Winter or spring marathons work the best for me because most of my long runs will occur in the fall or in the winter. Most marathon training programs are at least 16 weeks long, so you will need to pick a time for training when you can tolerate running outside for at least 4 months. Shorter runs can be done inside on a treadmill, but you will most likely want to do your long runs outside.
Similarly, you have to take the typical weather conditions at the race location into account. Taking my example from above, if I know that I want to run a winter or spring marathon because I don't like to run long distances when it is warm out, I then also have to look for a location where it won't be too balmy on the day of my winter or spring race. For instance, while I would love to run 26.2 with Donna: The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer in February in Jacksonville, Florida, my research indicates that it would most likely be way too hot for me to enjoy my experience.
You should also think about whether you would enjoy a race with a lot of entrants or one with not so many participants. For some runners, a big race might be too intimidating for a first marathon, while others might feel motivated by having so many other runners around them. Also, the bigger the race is, the more difficult it may be to get around other slower runners and walkers at the start of the race, which could negatively impact your finishing time.
Crowd support is another factor to take into consideration. For a first-time marathoner, being cheered on by the fans is sometimes a critical but often overlooked component for achieving your goal. When you are low on energy or when you hit "the wall" at mile 20, the enthusiasm of the race supporters may be just the thing that carries you to the finish line. The Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, Ohio, which was my first marathon, is well-known for its incredible fans and volunteers. Even though it took me over 5 hours to finish the race, I felt like a superstar when I crossed the "Finish Swine" because there were still many animated spectators lining the course at that late hour. It was definitely not a typical race in terms of crowd support!
Other factors are a little harder to judge effectively. The race t-shirt and medal usually change from year to year. The post-race refreshments for each race also tend to change over time. Whether there will be an adequate number of porta-potties along the course is also something that is difficult to determine prior to actually running the race.
Finally, take a good look at the course itself. Study the map of the course on the race website and the elevation charts. Will you want a flat, fast course for your first marathon, or will you welcome the challenge of a hillier course? The placement of the water/fuel/aid stations should also be carefully examined. For example, the Flying Pig Marathon has a fluid station at every mile, while many other marathons have them every two miles. Proper hydration is important for every marathoner, but it is particularly important for a first-time marathoner who doesn't know exactly what to expect.
Popular first-time marathons include the previously mentioned Flying Pig Marathon in May, the Walt Disney World Marathon in January, and the Marine Corps Marathon in October.
