An Interview with Harvey's Seatbelt Bags Founder-Owner Dana Harvey
I was recently able to interview the founder and owner of Harvey's Seatbelt Bags, Dana Harvey.
Did you ever think the company would be as successful as it is when you made the first bag for your wife Melanie, and decided to go into business?
I had no idea. It started as something fun just for a few friends and then took off from there. I thought it would be great to be able to make a living selling our seatbeltbags. In the beginning we both had day jobs and would make the seatbeltbags in the evenings and weekends. When orders started pouring in we had to quit our day jobs just to keep up with demand.
What is you favorite part of creating new ideas and designing Seatbelt bags?
My favorite part is and has always been seeing our bags on customers and hearing from customers about how they love a particular style, color or print. When we're designing we constantly ask ourselves if our customers will like this or that. I also love the challenge of creating new ways to express our original design. When we added prints it was really exciting. It opened up a whole new realm of possibilities. With the new Lola Ruffle bag it's great because it's still seatbelt but looks completely different from our original woven design.
What music inspires you?
My music taste is very eclectic. In my itunes you'll find some of the classics from the swing era, some classic rock, jazz, 80's new wave and contemporary artists too. I seem to like more mellow music though. No heavy metal or hard rock. People are confused when they look at the variety of music that I listen to.
Has creating Seatbelt Bags allowed to you travel to any unique areas?
Yes, we have a loyal following in countries all over the world and across the US too. Some of the countries we current sell to that I've had the privilege of traveling to are: Australia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Canada, Germany, Sweden and England. We just got back from a trip to Boston for a segment on Fox News.
Do you have a favorite Seatbelt Bag, pattern or design?
I like the original woven design. It's a classic and always looks good. I carry the laptop messenger with me everywhere. It's so durable and looks good on both guys and girls.
What inspires you when thinking of new ideas?
I look to the past a lot. I like vintage clothing, furniture and architecture. I like to watch old movies and look at old magazines. Sometimes Melanie and I go to the local flea market/ swap meet to look for fun ideas. I'm also inspired by timeless iconic design. I like Levis 501s, Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers, etc... I like how these things still look the same today as when they were designed decades ago.
You have collaborated with many artists, what art do you have hanging in your home or office?
Like my music, my taste in art is very eclectic. I tend to like pop art. Our office walls are covered with art from many of the artists that we've worked with and some unknown ones as well.
What do you see in the future for the company?
We'd love to be able to expand our retail stores to every state and even overseas. And it would be great to become an iconic product that's as great and as functional 100 years from now. I wish I could take a peek at a new seatbeltbag in 2109. I think it might look pretty much like a seatbeltbag today.
