Reactive Hypoglycemia Diet
People with reactive hypoglycemia need a specific diet tailored to their needs. This article discusses the types of changes needed to avoid blood sugar spikes.
The first piece of advice you should follow is to delete food from your diet that has a low nutrient density and switch them for more nutritious foods instead. For example, don't order a Double Whopper and fries-eat a wholegrain sandwich with cheese and salad instead. A burger and fries-as well as being loaded with fat-is also filled with high-carb foods such as white bread (the bun) and potatoes (French fries) which will spike your blood sugar and cause a crash an hour or two later. Don't eat baked chips instead of regular chips-it's the high-carb potatoes that are the problem...not the fat content of the product.
The second step to making your diet more blood sugar friendly is to swap out white noodles, bread, cakes, buns and other bakery/packaged goods for their whole grain counterparts. Read the ingredients list: you want the first ingredient on the back of the package to be whole grain (not "wheat flour").
Read your labels and avoid food products that contain sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup. Organic packaged foods are much less likely to contain hidden high fructose corn syrup. Breakfast cereals are another area that you will want to check the ingredients list. Many cereals state that they have "x servings of whole grain" but beware! Most breakfast cereals come loaded with sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup. Low GI, no-sugar breakfast foods are your best choice. Try fruit-juice sweetened yogurt with whole grain toast or Arrowhead Mills Kamut Flakes.
Eliminate soda from your diet. Even non-nutritive sweeteners are thought to cause a blood sugar response. If you find it hard to give up your soda, wean yourself off of it by diluting it with sparkling water. Switch to sparkling water (and buy a home carbonating machine to help the environment instead of drinking bottled water). Avoid caffeine (switch to decaf soy lattes instead-they are full of protein). Drink alcohol in moderate amounts-a glass of wine before dinner has been shown to be beneficial in that it lowers blood sugar spikes.
Perhaps the most important tip of all is to eat frequently. You may need to eat up to every two hours to keep your blood sugar stable. Eat smaller main meals and eat a snack in between. Be sure to not over-consume: weight contributes to a poor insulin response-the heavier you are, the harder your body will find it to control blood sugar levels.
