Philadelphia's Best Running Trails

A list of the best and most interesting running trails in Philadelphia. Whether you are a novice or training for you fifth marathon, there will be a trail here for you.

1. Kelly Drive
While Kelly Drive may be terrifying for some to drive on, it is a beautiful and scenic running route. Check out the cherry blossoms, statues and gardens while you run under bridges to the Art Museum. There is a popular 8 mile loop that goes from the Museum, down Kelly Drive, across the East Falls Bridge, then back up West River Drive and across to the Museum by Spring Garden. Be sure to pull a Rocky and include a run up the infamous Art Museum steps. Parking is available at Lloyd Hall.

2.Forbidden Drive
Despite the ominous name, Forbidden Drive is one of the most scenic running trails in the Philadelphia area. Spanning from Center City to nearly out by Valley Forge, it features over 26 miles of running trail in Fairmount Park. Forbidden Drive follows the Wissahickon Creek from Lincoln Drive to the County Line. This is a great trail to take in nature while training for that marathon.

3. Rittenhouse Square
If you're looking to do some running and then run some errands, Rittenhouse Square is your place. This popular square, located between 18th and 19th streets, is a perfect spot for running in the city. While it is not technically a trail, one lap around the square is approximately 0.4 miles--perfect for a quick lunch break jog.

4. Valley Forge Park
Valley Forge was the sprawling, picturesque site of George Washington's winter camp during the American Revolution. However, when its warm out, its perfect for exploring various running trails and paths, and including some learning along the way! Trails are about 4-6 miles long and the park is easily accessible by SEPTA.

5. Manayunk
The hills are alive with the sound of runners in pain. Manayunk, which is known for its San Fransisco-like hills, is the ideal place to run for those who are looking for a challenge. This four and a half mile loop up and around Ridge Ave to Main Street should only be attempted by the brave and/or sadistic. Street parking is widely available, so just park along one of these popular roadways and start your battle against the hills.

6. Philadelphia Marathon Loop
Running more places than the SEPTA subway lines, the Philadelphia Marathon route spans most of Center City and Manayunk. The official route map for the marathon and half marathon are included, as well as contains information about mile markers and water stops. Just pick which section you want to run and keep track of your miles as ou go along for an easy way to keep track of your training and mileage.
