The Nashville King - John Beardsley's Tribute to Elvis
Nashville's longest running musical is a tribute to Elvis, starring John Beardsley.
The site of this transformation is the Texas Troubadour Theatre in Nashville (2416 Music Valley Drive), across from the Grand Ole Opry. This show is not a mere impersonation of The King. For Beardsley, it is a tribute and an personal interpretation of the phenomenal career of the late Elvis Presley. Nashville's longest-running show is now 11 years strong, and the performances continue on Monday and Thursday night.
Other than long sideburns, Beardsley doesn't physically resemble Elvis at all.. But once the music starts, and he begins to sing, the mannerisms of Elvis comes to life. As you watch and listen to the man, there is no doubt that within the show's two hours, he has become Elvis. Not only does Beardsley have a voice that commands attention, he is a master at singing 30 of Elvis' beloved songs and has even perfected his gyrations. The show is non-stop and filled with enthusiasm as well as high energy. Other than quick costume changes, Beardsley very rarely leaves the stage.
Much to the delight of the audience, Beardsley is a seasoned entertainer and a believable Elvis. His costumes are impeccable, and range from leather outfits to the elaborate, be-jeweled jumpsuits and silk scarves that Elvis wore in Las Vegas. Near the ending of the show, Beardsley shows Elvis as a tired, aging performer several months before his death in 1977. True to Elvis in concert, Beardsley takes his silk scarves and wipes the sweat from his face before giving these scarves to the delighted women in the audience. Beardsley knows his audience and easily connects with them, since it is clear that a lot of them have seen the show in the past. It is not uncommon for him to walk down the center aisle, give kisses at random or serenade chosen members of the audience. He introduces his band and back-up singers, along with his wife, Darlene. When the show is over, he stages a "meet and greet" session in the Ernest Tubbs Record Store next door. He makes himself available for picture taking. He also invites the audience to ask questions, then freely gives answers.
As one of the numerous performers who either imitate or give tribute to Elvis, Beardsley's show began as part of a talent show while he was still a high school student. Over the years he has perfected Elvis, and has taken his skills and his tribute show all over the United States and the world. He has appeared or headlined with many musical performers. Most of Elvis' former musicians have praised the show. This summer, Wynona Judd joined Beardsley's admirers who work in the country music business and gave nothing but high praise for his show. When she attended "The Nashville King," she considered it a highly-entertaining, fun evening to share with friends. Judd is known to be a big admirer of Elvis.
John Beardsley's tribute to Elvis Presley is a family show. "The Nashville King" has a small, live band, two back-up female singers, and sound and lighting teams. But the focus is clearly meant for Beardsley, and his high-energy performance.
