Well the art form of Podcasting is pretty well established. I have become enamoured of the art form only recently myself. These little pocket radio programs bring up interesting questions.
Even if you are not hunting for music for your podcast, podsafe music sites are often a source for new bands and music that one might not hear on the radio and more often than not for free. The following are some sites that provide this sort of free musical content.
PodsafeAudio has several different ways in which you can search for music: Genre, Rating, Artist, and Region. I particularly like the Region selection because it's nice to see more or less 'local' musicians that I can hunt for and support. Unfortunately, there are really only three bands in my general area. Nevertheless, there are a lot of artists and styles to choose from.
Podcast NYC - Podsafe Music, is more of a mini-podcast in and of itself. It centers around New York City musical artists and has a smaller selection, but it does feature a feed you can subscribe to so that all the musical goodness comes right to you. It's selection is just what you'd expect: eclectic, energetic, a little edgy-- just like the city itself. All the songs are free to download. You also get some bonus information on the bands. There is a convenient RSS feed on the site that will keep you informed of the newest downloads.
The Podsafe Music Network is the largest database I have found. You have to register as a podcaster to download music, but it is free to do so. If you aren't going to podcast, the site isn't terribly useful for downloads, but you can listen to any song on the site without registering, and the selection is quite diverse from comedy to mood music to heavier rock sounds. There are a few RSS feeds to keep you current.
Two of my favorite artists who have done podsafe song projects and posted them on their website are Jonathan Coulton and The Beatnik Turtle.
Last year Jonathan Coulton did a 'thing a week' project in which he released one song on his site every week. Popular products of that year are "Code Monkey," an acoustic "Baby Got Back," "Re: Your Brains," and "Skullcrusher Mountain." I also love "Tom Cruise Crazy" and catch myself singing it often. Not all Coulton's songs are podsafe, but many from his 'thing a week' project are and all are licensed under Creative Commons. His RSS feed for his blog is available as his still available 'thing a week' feed.
Beatnik Turtle is currently in the midst of a 'Song a Day' project that has produced some catch tunes of many varieties. They have instrumental, humorous, serious, and downright odd songs in their songbook. Not only that, but they're all podsafe. They've also just discovered Twitter and are writing songs based on tweets they've read and received. The Song of the Day can be delivered right to your Itunes or other podcatcher.
As you can see, there are many sources for music that is available to use in your podcasts for a soundtrack. Most of it is not only free, but high quality. These networks and sites are an excellent resource for discovering new music. Most have a convenient RSS feed of their offerings. If one wishes to start a podcast, the lack of a soundtrack shouldn't discourage one-- either because it is required nor because of difficulty in finding one. The main difficulty is the huge selection to choose from.
