Oregon in the winter is amazing in its rugged beauty. One of the best ways to enjoy the diverse snow covered scenery that the state has to offer is to take to the trails with a pair of snowshoes.
The state of Oregon offers many beautiful trails for the snowshoe enthusiasts to enjoy. If you are new to the sport you might want to consider a guided trip to begin with until you get the hang of walking in the snowshoes and learning navigation in the wintertime. There are several outfitters that offer wonderful day treks for a newbie to try their hand at snowshoeing.
Here are two leading outfitters in the region that you might want to contact to try your first snowshoe excursion. Silver Strides caters to those over the age of 50.

Here are a list of several locations to try your hand at snowshoeing. They are all lovely and well marked trails. I have personally showshoed these areas in the past.
1) Frog Lake on Mt Hood, Government Camp, Oregon
This lake is easy to locate. It sits only a mile and half from Government Camp going towards Bend
Frog Lake is a nice area for new snowshoers to try their feet out. Its flat and easy to traverse. There are no steep hills or up and down hiking. Its also a truly lovely setting. Snowmobile's enjoy this area too.
2) Mirror Lake on Mt Hood, Government Camp, Oregon
This lovely little lake sits about three miles from Government Camp going towards Bend.
It is a very nice area for the beginning snowshoer because it is not an extreme hike. Its easy to locate and easy to stay on the trail to view the lake. You are close to civilization too.
3) Swampy Lakes outside Bend, Oregon
This area is a snow park outside Bend, Oregon heading up Mt Bachelor on the High Lakes Highway. It is well marked off the highway and easy to find. It is a very popular spot for beginners or advanced snow shoer's. There are several trails that are loops and quite short in distance which are ideal to try your hand at the sport. For the die hard enthusiast there are trails that exceed eight miles in length and you can be snowshoeing all day on.
No matter where you go in Oregon there are wonderful places to snowshoe. It is a sport that is fast gaining in popularity. I find it to be extremely peaceful. Its quiet and there is truly nothing between you and nature when you are out there. I have found it to be relaxing rather then physically exerting. Its almost like a way to commune. You can hear the birds sing in the tree's, you can often see deer or elk. I can think of no better way to pass an afternoon in a winter wonderland then using a pair of snow shoes to explore with.
