Ice Cream Cone Party Hats for Girls
Use real ice cream cones to make cool hats for a girl's birthday party!
So, your daughter is going to be a year older and she'll be having a party with all her friends. There will be food, a cake, games, party favors - oh yeah, and ice cream cones. But, instead of eating those ice cream cones why not have the girls wear them on their heads? Sound silly? Actually, it's an adorable look that's unusual but cool for a birthday party.
The type of ice cream cones to use are sugar cones - the ones with the pointed bottoms. The cones will be attached to headbands so the girls can easily wear the new hats. The type of headband that works best is a narrow one that is plastic and not metal. Also, the headband should be the type that is not covered in fabric, roping or other materials.
One way to make the headband is to cut two circles from fabric. The fabric should be something that's fairly thick and that doesn't unravel easily. If it's somewhat thin, cut four circles, and glue each two sets together, with wrong sides facing each other.
It takes two circles to make each headband. First, cover the first circle with a thin layer of white glue, on the wrong side of the fabric, then push it up against the underside of the headband, off to one side. Apply a thin coat of glue to the wrong side of the fabric on the other cloth circle and stick it, on the top of the headband, and over the existing circle. Press the two circles together so that you trap the headband between them and so that they line up perfectly.
To decorate the point of the ice cream cone, use hot glue to attach a large pom-pom or do something different. Tear or cut the ends of a length of mylar, a streamer, crepe paper, tissue paper or similar material. Or, use metallic icicles from Christmas as the hat decoration. Break or cut a bit of the point off of the cone, push the end of the material into the hole, hot glue the end to the inside, and allow the rest to hang out through the hole.
Apply a generous amount of hot glue around the large opening of the ice cream cone and attach it to the top fabric piece of the headband. Glue on glitter, lace, ribbon, beads or other things to cover the edges of the cone.
Instead of cloth to hold the cone to the headband you can also use paper. You'll have the best luck with thick paper that is cut in a long strip. Fold it accordion-style then bring the ends around to each other and tape them. This circle has more strength than a flat, paper circle.
The girls at the birthday party will look adorable rather than silly. If you want to you can let them make the hats when they get there. Or, for a large crowd, have them made in advance. Place them on a cylindrical pillow, rolled towel or similar thing to hold them upright until they're ready to be worn.
