Hot Hobby for This Scorching Summer
My hot hobby for this summer will take me to Venice, have me in Lycra shorts, aligning with the master painters, the tablet will be hard to swallow.
"By what means can this be achieved?" a mesmerized Leonardo would ask. "An Apple, Leonardo", would be my cheeky reply an iPad 2. Nowadays I can create pictures, fast sketches, portraits, website ideas for clients and pictures of beautiful women in any cafe using the cafe as my studio. Best of all there is no need to worry about splashes of paint or water over me, and my pallet consists of more colors and brushes I could comfortably carry.
The standard app that comes with the iPad, Zen brush is a beautiful simple introduction to creating minimalistic Zen paintings. Transparency levels are amazing and hey make a mistake no problem just undo or wipe and start again. David Hockney, always striving for more modern methods to create his hearts desire was the second artist I saw using the iPad and iPhone creating Commercial works of art. I have always had a close affection to Hockney being from the same town, Bradford and leaving the art college believing I can make it on my own, as he did. This and the enormous amount of YouTube videos and excellent talent drove me to sketch on on the sensual glass surface with any size brush I desired. I recently read that amusingly Hockney sometimes gets so carried away that he forgets it isn't real paint and gestures to wash his fingers, I feel exactly the same. Personally the beauty is that all your paints and brushes and effects are instantly at your disposal, and with practice the creative flow can escape the apprehension and sometimes fear which can occur when using acrylic or oil paints because your not sure if the next stroke will destroy the composition.
Now with the apps such as: Adobe Ideas, Brushes, Sketchbook, Paintbook, Art Rage etc there are styles and programs to suite all types. I find that the beauty of the IPad 2 is the camera/ Facetime additions as if there is a moment I need to capture fast then the camera captures it and I can develop the "painting" over time. I am still struggling to decide is this real Art or real painting? Having been an Airbrush artist for over twenty seven years I am still undecided whether its what I feel to be real art. The beauty though is it does assist in the creativity being free and creating a fluid line is hundreds of times easier than using a graphics tablet. Along with the iPad 2 come better speakers to help you get into the "Art Zone".
Possibilities for making money on holiday are much much easier, people love something different and new and in this day and age, instant! WiFi being almost everywhere you can charge $20 - $40 per portrait and simply email / Facebook them instantly and best of all your creation can become viral. Sending your portraits or works of art to YouTube and Facebook can help you become recognized and help gain commissions. I feel that this will be the emergence of real creative talent over the next few years to come.
Hopefully this will open a few doors when I return to Italy this year as now my portfolio is 9x12 inches and about 9 mm thick and I can store countless works of Art on the hard drive, and hey if I run out of space, no problem WiFi to Flickr, which amuses me when I consider that carrying three canvases an easel brushes, water and paints was so difficult and cumbersome, now I can even go to a nightclub sit in a corner and paint the neon lights and clubbers instantly, Charge them $10 a few of them and it's paid for my night out and hopefully got me a few more likes on Facebook. Oh yes, why the Lycra shorts well hey that will be to cycle in Treviso near Venice on the Pinarello Gran Fondo as cycling around Italy is the only place for me.
