Review of Tomboy Notes Notetaking App for Linux, Mac and PC

Having trouble remembering where you put your notes? Tomboy Notes has you covered! Just fire it up and start typing, and it'll find your note for you later on. And it's for Linux and Windows PCs, Macs and Android phones! Find out how to get it for free!

Tomboy Notes is a free download for Linux, Mac and Windows PCs, and it's made my life a lot easier. Now I can keep track of what I need to do each day more easily, and I can file away quotes and notes without having to worry about losing them. Plus, it's so fast, simple and easy to use that I barely have to worry about "using" the app at all, but can just open it up and start typing.

How does it work, and where do you get it? Read on!

Putting Tomboy Notes on your computer

If you are a Mac or Windows PC user, you can download Tomboy Notes for free at projects.gnome.org.

Mac users, click here to find out how to get Tomboy Notes working!

If you use a Windows PC, then click here instead.

If you are a Linux user, then just open your computer's Add/Remove Programs feature, click the checkbox next to Tomboy Notes and click OK. You don't need to download anything from their website.

How to use Tomboy Notes

You literally don't need me to explain it to you. It only has a few buttons, and you should be able to figure out what they all do just by looking at them. Some of the options in Preferences might be unfamiliar, but it also has a built-in Help feature to explain them.

When you create a new note, all you have to do is give it a name and start typing. You can use boldface, underlined, or italicized text just like in Microsoft Word, and you can also use strikethrough or indents. If you want to make a bulleted list, just start a line with a hyphen followed by a space, and when you hit enter it'll turn that line into the first bullet.

If you type the name of another note, that name will automatically turn into a link to the other note! You can click on it to bring that other note up in a new window.

You can sort notes by "notebook," to keep them more organized. But the best way to find something you've already written is just to click "Search all notes," then type in what you're looking for. It'll show you all the notes that have those words in them, and then if you double-click on a note it'll come up and show you where those words are. So you don't need to worry about filenames or folders or anything, like I used to. You can just start typing and taking notes right away. It's fire-and-forget notetaking, and it makes it easy to find what you've already written! And did I mention it's free?

Is Tomboy Notes right for you?

Tomboy Notes can't handle pictures, although if you copy-and-paste the web link to the picture you can click on it in your note and it'll open up in your browser. It also can't handle backgrounds, or pretty much anything beyond the basic text formatting and linking I mentioned. So if you want a notetaking app that's more like a "digital scrapbook" or sketchpad, you could try BasKet (for Linux), Evernote (Mac or Windows), or Microsoft OneNote (for Windows).

Finally, if you want to be able to see your notes on more than one computer, you can set up Tomboy Notes to synchronize notes with your other machines. But if you want to be able to see them and edit them on your phone, you'll need to be using an Android phone like the Motorola Droid, and have the TomDroid app installed. iPhone users might want to look into Evernote instead.

The Upshot

Give Tomboy Notes a try! It's free, and it just might help you stay organized and remember things.
