How to Play Chess
If you want to learn how to play chess here are some of the basics. Here is an introduction to chess. You will learn how to setup the chess board, move the pieces, castle, capture, checkmate, and more.
Setting Up The Chess Board
You place the chess board between the two players. The white pieces sit on one side, and the black pieces sit on the other. White squares should be in the right hand corner for both players. There is eight Pawns and they are placed on each player's second row with the remaining pieces placed in the first row. Rooks are placed on the corners, Knights go next to the Rooks, followed by Bishops.
The Queens are placed on their own colors. The White player puts the White Queen on the white square. The Black player puts the Black Queen on the black square. The easy way to remember that is "Queen on her own color." The King is placed on the remaining open square. The person that moves first is the player that is playing White. The players then alternate moves. There is no passing or skipping a move.
Moving The Pieces
Pawns can only move forward. Sideways or backwards moves are not allowed. Pawns can move two squares at a time if it is their first move. Meaning they still have to be on the second row in order to move two squares. After they move from the second row, they are only allowed to move one square at a time. Pawns move in a forward diagonal way when they are going to capture a piece. There must be an opponent's piece in the diagonal square in order for the Pawn to move there. Pawns do not capture pieces by moving forward. If the Pawn has a piece sitting directly in front of it then it cannot move and is blocked. Once you capture a piece it is removed from the board.
Knights are tricky to move. The Knight moves two squares straight and the one square to the side. An example is moving the Knight down two squares and the either to the left or right one square. An easy way to remember this is calling it an L-shape. If a square is occupied by a piece that is the same color as the Knight then it is blocked from that square. However, if the square is occupied by a piece of the opponent's color then the Knight can capture that piece. Knights can jump over other pieces and it is the only piece that is allowed to jump. The Knight is also the only piece that can move out of the first row and a player's first move since it has the ability to jump over other pieces.
Rooks move in any number squares in its row or column. If an opponent's piece is occupying a square on the Rooks row or column then the Rook can capture that piece. However, if a piece of the Rooks same color is occupying that square then the Rook can stop at any of the open squares before the piece. On an empty board the Rook can move to fourteen different squares.
Bishops move any number of squares along its diagonals. Each Bishop is confined to squares of a single color for the entire chess game. If an opponent's piece is occupying a square that is diagonal from the Bishop then the Bishop can capture that piece. However, if a piece of the Bishops same color is occupying that square then the Bishop can stop at any of the open squares before the piece. One of your Bishops starts on a white square and the other starts on a black square. On an empty board the Bishop can move to thirteen different squares.
The Queen can move any number of squares along its row, its column, or its diagonals. The Queen is a combination of the Rook and Bishop moves. It can capture pieces in any direction. The Queen is the strongest piece on the board.
The King is the easiest piece to move. It is allowed to move one square in any direction. The King can capture its opponent's pieces. It can also be blocked by its own color.
Castling
Castling is the only situation where you can move two pieces at the same time. The King and the Rook have to be on their initial squares and haven't moved. The squares between the King and the Rook must be empty. The King moves two square toward the Rook and the Rook then hops over the King. You can castle to either side of the board. Your are not allowed to castle if the King is under attack, move through a square that is under attack, or move to a square that is under attack. The Rook can move through a square that is under attack.
En Passant
This is when the Pawn tries to move past the opponent's Pawn. The White Pawn moves to the fifth rows. In the column next to it is a Black Pawn that is still on its initial square. The Black Pawn can move one or two squares. If the Black Pawn moves two squares then the White Pawn moves as if it were capturing its diagonal and the Black Pawn is removed from the board. En passant is only available to the White Pawn if you do it immediately after the Black Pawn's move.
Pawn Promotion
When the Pawn moves to the eighth row it must change into another piece. By doing this you promote the Pawn. You can make the Pawn into any piece except for another King or Pawn. When promoting a Pawn, the Pawn generally becomes a Queen. You can promote the Pawn to a Queen even if you already have another Queen on the board. This means you can have up to nine Queens on the board at one time. If you need a second Queen and one of your Rooks has been captured, turn it upside down and use it as a Queen.
Check, Checkmate, and Stalemate
One attack that can never be ignored is an attack on the King. If you have no way of escaping the attack then the game is over. When a piece is attacking the King and the King can either move from being attacked or another piece can stop the attack then this is called check. If you are in check then you have to move out of it. If you have no way of moving out of check or blocking the check then this is called checkmate and you lose the game. If player has no legal moves and is not in check this is called stalemate and the game is a draw.
