How to Repair Sagging Gutters Easily
In the past I had rigged up gutters using small pieces of wood. To use this method, you remove the gutter spikes and the ferrules (the tubes that the spikes run through inside the gutter).
In the past I had rigged up gutters using small pieces of wood. To use this method, you remove the gutter spikes and the ferrules (the tubes that the spikes run through inside the gutter). Now take a thin strip of wood and place it into the hole where the spike will be driven. It may be necessary to use super glue or another quick dry glue to hold the strip of wood in place in the hole. Now, reassemble the gutter, ferrule, and spike and drive the spike home into the original hole that will now be tighter with the wood strip in it. As simple as this sounds there always seems to be something that goes wrong. This process, while inexpensive, can be time consuming.
As I only had my lunch hour to work on the sagging gutters on my house, I needed a quicker way to fix the gutters. I ran to Lowe's and picked up a package of gutter screws (available at Home Depot, Ace, and others as well). 10 gutter screws cost about $9, not a great deal of money, but certainly more expensive than the almost free method listed above. Application of the gutter screws is simple. Pull out the old, stripped gutter spikes. Insert gutter screw through the gutter and new ferrule and line up with hole. Using the supplied bit with the gutter screws in a screwdriver or ratchet, drive the screw into the preexisting hole. This process is very simple and quick, in fact it took more time to setup the ladder than it did to apply the gutter screws.
While there are other products on the market to replace stripped gutter spikes and reinforce sagging gutters, this is probably the simplest as it uses the holes that already exist from the stripped gutter spikes. The gutter screws snugged tightly into the holes and the screws should hold the gutters up longer than gutter spikes that always seem to work loose.
The gutter screws that I used were made by Amerimax Home Products, Inc. The Amerimax gutter spikes are available in white and brown according to the information in the package. I am certain that other manufacturers make similar products as well.
