A New Therapy for Those Who Suffer from Ringing in the Ears
There are two new therapies being developed for those who suffer from tinnitus or ringing in the ears. With the advent of personal communication and music devices becoming more common, there is a potential for more diagnoses of tinnitus in the future.
The Scientific American reports on a new therapy for those who suffer from tinnitus. Tinnitus causes about 10 million Americans to hear a ringing in the ear. Tinnitus can be temporary or it can be a long term affliction. The new therapy uses a sound therapy device that will play more soothing low frequency sounds which will hopefully provide much more relief than the industry standard white noise currently utilized. The hand held device is equipped with headphones and sounds produced will be customized to the patient's level of tinnitus.
I worked on jet aircraft for over 20 years, mostly in the military or for a government contractor. There were many times that I was placed in a position to where I either did not have ear protection or could not use it. Subsequently my hearing is currently damaged. Many times after work, I would go somewhere that was quiet and listen to New Age style music to relax; it was mostly for stress, but it probably also good for my hearing.
This new therapy has many applications for use. Returning service members from Iraq and Afghanistan report that tinnitus is a common disability that they suffer from. Additionally, anyone who works in the entertainment industry and is exposed to loud music on a daily basis could find relief through this therapy. I was a DJ in my spare time and the constant exposure to loud music usually meant that I was hard of hearing afterwards for several hours. Also as the widespread use of personal communication and music devices with earphones and blue tooth type devices continues to grow, I think we will be seeing more diagnoses of tinnitus in the future. I am sure that I will be one of them. I did have short times, both after work and in my spare time that my hearing was significantly affected with tinnitus.
The Scientific American also is reporting of a new concept being developed to place a small pain relieving device into the membrane between the middle and inner ear. The device would be wireless which would allow the doctor and the patient to control the dosage. These two therapies hold great promise to allow those who suffer from tinnitus to live more normal lives.
